johnyb - I have the same boiler and I am experiencing the same thing, lots of smoke when opening the fire box door.  I believe, however, this is normal.  It's been doing since the first time I fired her up well over a year ago.  I always wait the 15 seconds or more before opening the fire box door after opening the by-pass door.  My handle on occasion needs to be tightened but I do not believe it has a bearing on the operation of the by-pass door unless the handle falls completely off.  I believe that atmospheric pressures or other elements may be the cause of the smokey situation, but I believe it's simply the nature of the beast.   Roger

My E-2300 does the same thing, always has.  The bypass damper has never opened more than 1/2 way and I was told that there is a reason for that.  Not sure what that could be.  Baffle against flames going up the chimney??  I don't know.  I have my boiler covered over so the smoke is an issue with me,  I could use a bigger exhaust fan.   I've thought about adding a draft fan in the chimney to suck the smoke out like my Wood Doctor does, about $165 I think.  Don't have it right now.

Hi All,
New to forum.
On my E-2400 the side handle binds almost totally where it takes all my strength and weight to move it only part of the way up or down.
Have been able to work it free in the past but the factory denies the issue and am waiting again for the dealer to take an active interest, other than to call the factory for the third time.
Unit is 2 yrs old.

Any report of similiar issues?

Thanks,

bro d

brodonh - I have not experienced that problem with my E-classic 1400, yet.  One thing comes to mind is, is it free of creosote build up?  Perhaps something getting in the way?  When I perform a thorough cleaning on my OWB, one of the things I do is remove the cap off the rear of the chimney to remove the ash build up.  You should be able inspect the operation of the by-pass door through this opening.  You'll need a second person to operate the handle while you watch it move.  Perhaps all is needed is a simple adjustment.  Roger

Thanks,

bro d

Binding may be caused by a bushing in behind the side bypass handle itself that may be going bad. Probably not the upper paddle mechanism.

That makes sense.
Once it is free again it is fine.
I thought that it was a washer that slowly turns with use and is out of round or untrue thickness wise.  It is a bear to move right now.
thanks

Hi All,
Central boiler sent techs from my retailer to fix the side handle binding problem.
After denying the problem for a year they made a bushing that is beefy-er and now the thing is working perfect.
You Guys are great.
Thanks for being here.
