Title: ok I have pump problems again any ideas
Post by: allis48 on February 10, 2013, 08:06:17 AM
This is the third pump in say 8 months of burning cause i don't run it year round. I took this one apart and found chunks of black grit stuck in plastic propeller the smaller pieces were bigger bit they broke on removal. It almost looks like black beauty sand blasting shot.

It don't suck off of the bottom of the tank so I don't know what it is, I'm def not crazy about broeders, if it still under warranty call nc and have them allow you credit on the armstrong e9 pump, it's a much better design, flows more water and uses well under half the electricity of the broeder.

Well, if it were mine I'd totally drain the entire system, rinse the tank out to the best pf my ability and go from there.  If your using wet rotor pumps that use the water for lubrication and cooling you'll likely continue to have the issue.   A filter may be a good idea as well

Does that stuff stick to a magnet? I wonder if the pump was magnetizing the rotor enough to pull iron out of the water. It wouldn't surprise me. Those pumps suck so much extra power, maybe they are make the magnetic field way too strong with it. I will have to try testing when I get time if it does stick to a magnet.

RSI, I never thought of that, it wouldn't surprise me either

It would also explain why those pumps fail over and over some places and never do at other places. I know a place I had a couple fail at they said they had a lot of iron in their water. It was so bad they had to have a filter system installed just for iron.

Yep, I just recall a situation here, 3 broeders in a year

He went to a small grundfos and hasn't had issues yet "that I know of"  he was using well water with high iron

Wow, good thinking

I have a lot of iron in the water as well, but the water I used to fill it with was ran thru my house iron filter and water softner other wise the water turns red after about 15 minutes. I also have about 6 bottle of water treatment stuff in it. I am out of town this week will check the crap when I get back to see if it sticks to a magnet.  Do you think they didn't do a good job of cleaning the tank after manfacturing, and has crap left in it from then?

to be fair it has two pumps on it the two orignals went out about the same time about 3 months the one new replacement which is the one that went bad this time from the day the dealer put it on and he was there when I checked with heat gun ran like 30 degrees hot than the other and that is the one that went bad again.

Sounds almost exactly the same as how the water is and how it was treated where I had the worst problem with those pumps.

Last year he quit answering the phone when I called. I tell people that ask me about unit I liked the unit but hate the dealer. My original pump almost made 3 heating seasons; I did haul water from the city water plant instead of using my well water which is high in iron. I treat with NC recommended treatment and also pull water samples for a look every year. Samples are clear and I have very little iron residue in the filler neck. New pump is on the way from Scott now cause my current one is rattling like crazy!

Surprising it's still going if it's been noisy for a while...    They sometimes stay noisy a little while then suddenly rattle and fail

No problem Scott, My propane was getting stale. I really needed to make sure that side of the system still worked as it's been 3 years 8) I could not have installed the new pump till Saturday anyhow.

Pump came in this morning! Been kinda cold here, load of wood from {Tuesday} is still there and burning. Kept boiler temp up, no chance of freezing. I learned somthing else cause of this! Looks like I could shut the pump off and leave for about a week with out worry!

shut the pump off and leave for a week?...even if your lines are below frost they are not at the OWB...mister, i think you will have problem!

I would put a inline filter in to reduce the amount of particulate in your water. I have one and it works great stopped the crap from circulating in the water. Just have to schedule clean outs or flushing depending on what type you put in. The are not to expensive.

Pump went out Tuesday morning right after I loaded the boiler. Been below freezing every night (high teen to low twenties). No circulation by the pump. Heat exchanger in furnace duct work is getting blasted by propane heated air every time the furnace runs. Boiler still had over half a load this morning with smoke trickling out the stack. Boiler temp at 145 this morning, blower fans been off since Wednesday night. Pump still very hot to the touch. Peeled back the insulation on the lines from the pump down to where they go into the ground, too hot to hold on to. I think I’m gonna be fine for a week at current temps, even a little colder 8)....mister

Sure will, I get back on after I switch them out and let ya know how it went. Ready for boiler heat again, momma thinks it's warmer than propane. I think the $ leaving the propane tank cools her off :bag:

Pump installed no issues. The little groves for the nut to set in are great! Boiler still had about half a load of wood and took right off as soon as I hit the switch. Temp was down to 135. Back at 180 now. Guess I'll be aging the propane like a fine Bourbon again for a while.

Hello Allis48,

I too went with a Taco pump a few weeks ago.  Taco 011 is pumping my whole system  where before there were two brodoer pumps.  I posted a short video in a Nature's comfort gt-220 thread.   Guess we'll see how they last.

Call NC directly. They have been very good at getting back to me.
I'd just buy a Grundfos water pump, forget the warranty, and the hassle. They run for a long time. I keep one as a back up.

The cheapest way is to use a Y strainer. If you don't have room, you can get a valve with built in strainer and just replace an existing valve.

There are also filters that will collect smaller junk but they are a lot larger and cost a lot more.

Could you please share a link which y connector you would use?
How you clean the screen? Just turn the water pump off?
Thank you

This is what they look like http://www.grainger.com/product/MUELLER-STEAM-SPECIALTY-Y-Type-Strainer-1RNC8?s_pp=false&sgAttributes= (http://www.grainger.com/product/MUELLER-STEAM-SPECIALTY-Y-Type-Strainer-1RNC8?s_pp=false&sgAttributes=)
With that one you can put a valve on the cleanout and flush it somewhat but you have to unscrew the larger part to get the screen out.

Thanks a lot.
I found these too;
DUPLEX STRAINERS

More $ but easier to clean out. Not sure how well it works. I may try to Y-strain.
