Title: chimney cap on g200 to cut down on fly ash on roof?
Post by: tinfoilhat2020 on January 03, 2018, 09:35:37 PM
Anyone using a chimney cap on their G series?

I started with 2ft of insulated pipe on my stove, and then after noticing a lot of fly ash pieces accumulating on my roof I decided to go out and buy another 2ft of insulated SS pipe and also threw on the SS chimney cap I had laying in the shop from my only wood stove set up. All pipe and cap are the Selkirk from Menards. I did all of this over the holiday break. I have been running with the 4ft of insulated SS pipe and the cap for about 5 days now and I seem to have cut back a bit on the amount of chunky fly ash on my roof, but I am starting to wonder if the chimney cap could be restricting the draft as well?? ive noticed a bit more smoking than normal and a wee bit longer cycle times. Not much more on wood usage though. The cap and top 1ft of the chimney pipe is stained black already and brown juice is already starting to run down the stack. Seems to be worse build up on the chimney stack with the cap on.

Anywho, just figured Id share this in hopes that someone may have some similar experience to share. Im thinking I may just take the cap off and see how it does with just the 4ft of stack.

Thanks

The steam in the exhaust will condense on the cap and drip constantly. Can eventually make a real mess on the roof. I'd run it straight out.

Personally I prefer a short pipe as a long one can accumulate more fly ash at the outlet of the fan. I'd rather it get flung out. Mine is in fierce wind right now and not much lands on the roof, but on calm days it does sometimes.
Speaking of wind.... Wow it's humming out there. ..

Thanks Eldon. I think I'll try just taking the cap off for now. I paid for a 2nd piece of insulated SS pipe so iime as well use it. It's only 4ft total.

I have 2-36" sections and the 18" section it came with for my G200 to get it the proper height above my roof line it is in. I made a "Tin man" cap for mine with an inner cone to help direct the flue gasses out. The cap is well above the chimney and my primary purpose is to keep torrential rain from going down the chimney in marginal heating times of the year. Keeping it plenty high prevents any possibility of restricting the flue gas flow.

I may try something like that, I have a cap on mine tp keep the rain out during the shoulder seasons, also got tired of taking the bucket off so I could demonstrate the powered bypass when people stopped in to look at a stove.

I don't worry about it.  A good rainstorm or some wind will clean it right off.

Took some pics today. Very simple but works well and no restriction for venting.

Also soybeans! I like to have healthy deer and it is illegal to use feeders here so a few acres of corn and beans keeps them fat and close by. I take off what's left of the corn in the spring and the beans are usually gone long before that.
