Title: Exactly how clean do I need to get the fire box
Post by: Yotamonster on April 28, 2018, 05:51:05 PM
I've had the boiler for a little over 1 month now and I'm shutting it down how clean do I need to get the roof of the Firebox because it has quite a bit of gooey creosote buildup

Scrape it the best you can. I’ve found it helps if a few weeks before you let it go out you use some of that powder for like a fireplace, works best if you sprinkle in on the coals right before it shuts off. If you add it at the start of a cycle it doesn’t seem to do as much good as the fumes are pulled down into the reaction chamber.

I wouldn't worry too much about creosote in the firebox of a GS200, just check the air channels, make sure they are open good and your damper plate is clean. Use a little atf on it to keep it slick. Scrap around the door jam.I may be the worlds worst, but have not seen any deterioration with creosote on stainless. Figure next fire will burn it off.

Just finished cleaning out my G200 after going through 14 full cord of oak this year. I think I am a wood slave! LOL. My G200 didn't have the rear baffles in it but I put a set in the rear this year but still got creosote behind them anyway. I also had more than normal creosote behind my side panels. It is important to keep the lower side support channel air holes clear of creosote.

It is more important to be sure to get all ash out of the unit everywhere as this will even corrode stainless steel if it gets damp and isn't cleaned up.
