General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Unhappy Campers

Cant win this year i guess, wife told me to shutdown the boiler because it was making the house to hot when it hit 60 outside. Then wants to know why the water isnt as hot as it was all winter.( no boiler have too turn propane on) Then this morning wakes me up and tells me i need to start the boiler, its cold. Go look at the water temp 90 degrees after three days of no fire :bash: Cardboard fire it is, now running wide open. You would think after only three days of no burning you wouldnt miss that gasification flame, shure was nice to watch it roar.

Fire Wood / Awful just awful
« on: April 17, 2014, 12:26:07 PM »
Finally got a chance to get up in the back forty today, was riding on the property line, gawking at my firewood still growing. Decided to take a walk on next property over from me and all his oak is dying on about three acres, tops already gone. No idea what the cause may be. These are nice oaks too most are 16"DBH. Hope whatever is killing his stays there and doesnt cross the line.

Fire Wood / cords to gallons
« on: March 09, 2014, 06:38:13 PM »
How many gallons of oil to a cord of wood? Lets say 2 year seasoned. I see a lot of different numbers ranging from 125 to 200 gallons on the internet.

Plumbing / Underground Lines

If you could, would you use sprayfoam and make your own lines instead of using Thermopex or Logstor. I figure I could save roughly 2500 bucks and have a much higher r value

Reading an article on msn, central Indiana DOT has racked up 7.4 million miles this winter. Diesel trucks at say 4 bucks a gallon. WAY OVER BUDGET

General Discussion / Wood to Oil
« on: March 02, 2014, 04:34:40 AM »
Do you suppose the Mod. Could come up with a way where all of us could post how much wood we burn per year ( average) for a set period of time, so we could actually see how much in terms of money we are NOT sending to BIG OIL.    Any guesses?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Cold house
« on: February 10, 2014, 06:38:27 PM »
Woke up too a somewhat chilly house this morning 66. Hmmm wonder whats up. Wandered out to the boiler (430 am) dam thing is blowing smoke signals, open door and WOOOOF quite the explosion. No hair loss, Phew.
Checking things out, turns out a big corner of my newly made firbrick nozzle broke of and plugged her up in good shape.  A little swearing and poking(more like thrashing) and it finally broke free. Back to the gasification world. I guess having that little extra storage got me buy for last night, water temp was down to 135.
