Free pine is fine
« on: February 03, 2012, 04:07:57 PM »

I am thinking the thinner I split pine the better and faster it will dry, what do you pine burners do? I have collected a ton of huge ( supper sticky ) logs and need to start splitting and covering it a to hopefully burn next winter

It will be dry enough next year if you don't split it.  If you split it to much now, it will burn up so fast you won't be able to put wood in the furnace as fast as it will burn it.

If you split it now it should be ideal for next winter...  Don't split it into tooth picks but just regular sized firewood..  Pine dries well if it's covered and should be darn near the 18-20% mark by next heating season.  Oak and hardwoods however can take 2 years to reach there ideal moisture content.

Don't let anyone tell ya wet or green is better, it kills it, and under normal circumstances it's nearly impossible to get it to dry.

I've burned a few big white pines and they burn well, don't last as long as our hardwoods but still its fuel

Scott...I'm with you on this.  We have about 8 really tall garbage Cotton Wood trees that MUST come down this year.  The fellow that is gong to fell them says they're junk trees.  I told him I don't care, to me it's FREE WOOD!  And it will still produce heat...just have to fill the box more.

pine burns fine and nice and hot, but no bed of coals, tried wet, dry, split, whole, 8 hrs later have to relight. so now put one shovel of coal on top and gives me some coals to get reloaded and will restart its self..  only 2nd winter still learning....

I have access to 10 acres of white pine and red pine. The pine i burn from standing dead trees with little to no bark so they are really dry. The white pine burns great but the red wont burn unless you mix it in with some hardwood or white pine. I dont split the white pine and burn rounds 10 to 12" with no problems. Takes 4 or 5  pieces to fill up the fire box and burns for 12 hours in the winter.
I would say if the white pine is dead and is really dry it will give off as much heat as maple if its only semi dry.
