Well it looks likes it good thing i ordered the new pump, i let the existing pump cool down to touch, restarted it & it does do anything but hum & get hot, i think its fried..  new pump will be here on tuesday i am told..

Thanks for the repy CountryBoy & LJ, pump is still hot to touch this morning & not working..  i was able to turn the screw in the back of the pump so hopefully it is just a matter of it cooling down, will update later today to see if that did the trick..

i did end up ordering a pump today from grainger, it was stainles steel vs cast iron(the one i have now), wont be here for a few days, but hopefully it will just serve as a backup for later...

Thanks again guys..

i think i might of found the problem, my damper door was slightly cracked open..  too much air probably got in & caused the rise in temp(as i have never had this issue before)..  pump is still too hot, waiting till the morning to see if it will cool off & start working again..

Shaver Furnace / When do i know my circulating pump needs to be replaced
« on: December 11, 2014, 07:35:20 PM »
2nd season with my Shaver furnace, everything has been going great until tonight.  My circulating pump on my furnace quit working, it was working this morning but when i got home it was off & steam was coming out of the overflow tube on the side of the furnace(i could hear the water bubbling).  The unit is approx 5 years old, but i have heard pumps should last pretty long, could the water getting too hot have an impact on the circulating pump working?

Thanks in advance for any advice..

Thanks to everyone for your help..  I was able to get about 1/2 cord of good seasoned hedge & oak, i've been using a mixture of this wood & the old stuff left behind by the previous owner & i am glad to report that my house temp is now sitting & holding at 72 degrees(outside temp is -3).  Wife is happy & if momma's happy everyones happy...

I will definitely seal that top plate & get the upgraded fan in the off season...

Again thanks to all for the help!

Yea, i did all the things you mentioned & was still having the same problem.  I think it might be the wood i am using, i am wood the previous owner left & several of the pieces are waterlogged (i think).  When i use some drier pieces(far & few at this point) the furnace seems to work much better..  Thanks for the advice, will keep you posted.

One more thing i see several folks have made upgrades to their system, i will do an inventory of what i have after the season & see what upgrades i can do that would make a difference, might need some help then on choosing what needs to be done..

Thanks again!

Shaver Furnace / More Rookie Questions
« on: February 27, 2014, 03:26:58 PM »
At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, i throw myself at the mercy of this forum.  I have called & left several messages with Weld Rite, but no reply.  1st year with inherited Shaver 165 & having heating issues (house wont get above 65 degrees)

1.  Does it matter where you build your fire, on the grates or off the grates in the back of the box?
2.  I thought the way the furnace was supposed to work was once a fire is built it will stay burning hot while the blower is running.  I cleaned the fire box out completely, started a new fire, fire gets really hot with doors open, but when i close the doors & turn on blower the fire seems to almost go out after a few minutes, becomes real smokey with no flames.  I open the doors & the fire takes off again.
3.  The plate on the back of the furnace is not sealed, i can lift it off, i have felt the water by hand & it is luke warm at best.  Should i seal this plate?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks!

1st of all thanks to everyone that has helped me out, this forum is awesome.  Still working through the 1st season with my inherited shaver..  Earlier in the season i was able to get the house to stay at 71-75 degrees in the house.  Now I cannot seem to get the tempature in the house above 65 degrees, my wife really loves that..

I have cleaned out the furnace entirely & started a new fire.  I get the fire so hot that flames are shooting out the door, i shut the door turn on the blower fan & i have a good stream of smoke coming out the chimney stack.  Does anyone have any ideas on what i might be doing incorrectly?

Thanks for any help

Thanks for the quick reply, i have already received more information from this forum than i have received from the Shaver company in the past month, no one wants to return phone messages & good luck getting anyone to answer..

I have done what you mentioned below, i have no obstructions in the chimney, & my fan is working well (I just replaced it last month), so well that when i shut the front door (with a fire blazing) & turn the fan on smoke poors out the front door.  I am going to replace the seal around the front door this coming weekend, do you think that will force the smoke up & out the chimney & keep the fire going?  Also, until i replace the door gasket I am slightly opening the front door & ash door to regulate the fire, do you think that is too dangerous?  Many Thanks!

Shaver Furnace / Newbie Question
« on: February 03, 2014, 05:51:00 PM »
Hi, this is our 1st winter in a house we purchased that already had a Shaver installed (not sure on the model #, it is a front loader with ash door).  December the unit worked really well, we saved 50% over our November bill.

Currently I have been having trouble keeping a fire going after i shut the front door. Smoke is hardly coming out the chimney stack, I have cleaned the stack several times this past weekend & the issue remains.  As soon as i shut the door smoke comes pooring out the front & ash doors & when i open the door a ton of smoke comes out & the fire is just smoldering.  Any help for a rookie would be greatly appreciated!!
