RidgeWood Stoves, defunct, support only / Re: Ridgewood warranty
« on: January 31, 2014, 02:37:20 PM »
I had a converation with Craig the owner today about that and while I can't say for sure that they will he seemed confident that they can make necessary changes to be compliant with the law.  I would highly suggest you call Craig and speak to him about it.  I am picking up my stove a week from today and I am very excited about it.  I spoke to a person who has been burning one of these for a while now and he loves it.  Personally I think they are the best bang for the buck on the market.

For the money it seems like these would be hard to beat. My concern is that in my relatively mild climate that the stove will have problems going out when it doesn't call for heat very often. Has anyone had issues with this or has anyone added a blower to the door?

I am going this weekend to look at a used 4400 and I want to test the water jacket. I intend to cap all the inputs/outputs but one then make a contraption with a Schrader valve and a gauge for the last one. I know these are vented systems so I am not sure how I am going to plug the vent. I would also like to get opinions on how much pressure I can safely put on the water jacket.  Anything particular I should look for on the unit? It is about 10 years old. I went to a local word master dealer and looked at the 4400 and I was very impressed.

Thanks boiler house. I hate to buy something when I have that tank. If I do end up using it I will frame it with some light channel or something to strengthen it.

Home Made / material for water jacket and firebox
« on: January 29, 2014, 03:47:12 PM »
I am having trouble finding a suitable setup for a firebox and water jacket. I can get two propane tanks. One is a 30" and the other a 38" but that doesn't give me much water capacity.  My other thought was to use the 38" one for my fire box and build a square water jacket from 1/4" plate. My third option is to use the smaller 30" propane ta k inside a 300 gallon farm fuel tank. I already have the farm tank so this would be the cheapest for me. I have read that several manufactures only use an 1/8" inch water jacket. Can I get your opinions please.

Thanks,
Mike

Scott, can you share where you purchased your steel from?  I am getting ready to start a build and don't really care to cut propane tanks if I can avoid it.

Woodmojoe I am close to you and was curious if you might know where a guy could get some tanks like you used. I live down the highway by diamond Missouri.

Very nice build. I am going to build one this spring and had a couple of questions.

Did you insulate the front plate at all? What did that door cost and did it include the frame? Where did you place your bungs for exit/return and did you baffle your tank or run your lines into the boiler tank at all? Where did you place your aquastat sensor?

I am chomping at the bit to get started. I just want to make sure I have a design that will work well.

Thanks for any advice.

Can someone who has done it give me some idea of cost to build your own.  I have the know how and the equipment to do it but I don't want to spend more than I could get a new or good used one for.  I am thinking about taking a 30" diameter 1/2" wall pipe about 36" long for my firebox and putting that inside a 48" 1/4" walled pipe. I will baffle the sides and return the water at the bottom so it has to go all the way around the firebox and be picked up by two outlets at the top and pumped to my water to air heat exchangers. Pumps would run all the time and I would use an electronic control to kick on the induction fan when the water got below a certain temperature.

I have the opportunity to buy this used Woodmaster 4400 for $3000.  The unit has one pump on it and needs a chain for the ash auger.  The seller has never used it.  He purchased it used but never installed it.  It is a 2004 model. It has been stored with the water jacket empty which the dealer suggests could cause rust and would not be able to be seen from the outside.  The seller said the pump runs and the induction foan works.  What is your opinion of this price for this stove.

I am heating about 2500 sf. of home and a 1200 sf shop will only be heated sometimes.

Thanks,

Mike
