Hardy / Fan & Pump
« on: February 15, 2018, 10:21:36 AM »
Thinking about picking up an extra fan and pump.  Some online retailers are quite a bit cheaper than my local deal.  Just wondering if anyone here has purchased theirs online and can give a good recommendation?

Electronics / Thermostat Question
« on: January 26, 2017, 07:39:51 AM »
Hi, I have a White Rodgers 1F78 on my boiler.  It's a programmable thermostat.  It works fine but seems to kick on and off very often (like 5-7 times per hour).  I was reading in the manual that there is a wire I can clip to make it go longer before cycling:

Hydronic (Hot Water or Steam)
Heating Systems
This thermostat is set to operate properly with a forced-air heating
system. If you have a hydronic heating system (a system that
heats with hot water or steam), you must set the thermostat to
operate properly with your system.
The factory default setting is forced air heat. Clipping jumper
W905 on the circuit board will produce a longer heating cycle
which is normally for hot water or steam (hydronic) systems. Both
settings produce a very accurate temperature control and can be
set to your personal preference. As received, the thermostat
cycles the system just under 1˚F. With W905 clipped, the system
cycles at approximately 1.5˚F.

Should I do this or just leave it be?  I would try but there will be no way to reattach after clipping it without soldering it back.

Thanks!

Yes, I looked over the weekend.  It's a 009.  Yes, it's a Hardy with 3/4" lines.  He a good friend and I would like to rebuild it for him if it's not too difficult.  Is this what I need?

https://www.amazon.com/Taco-009-022RP-Circulator-Replacement-Cartridge/dp/B003EUVFR0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1481576008&sr=8-4&keywords=taco+009+replacement+cartridge

Or here's one even cheaper on eBay:

Not sure what it says "Bronze".  It's a stainless pump.  Can anyone let me know on what is involved with doing the rebuild?

Thanks!

Hey Guys,

A friend of mine had a pump go out of his Hardy H4.  It's a Taco pump.  He was wondering if there are rebuild kits available for them?  He bought a new one but would like to rebuild this one for a backup.

I have no idea but thought I'd ask on here.

I went with Hardy (H4) and love it.  I am already on my third season.  I know they aren't the boiler of choice on this forum.  I was told by multiple people how much wood they burn.  It worried me a lot but I can say now that is not true.  I rarely put wood in mine more than once a day.  There are way too many other variables to come to that conclusion anyway.  My local dealer is really friendly and knowledgeable.

My first choice was Heatmaster but the local dealer was a backwoods hillbilly that knew nothing.  I have no regrets putting the brakes on that guy.

Scott helped me out numerous times with all my noob questions.  I always like reading his posts.  If he lived closer to me I would definitely went with Heatmaster.   Hope to see him post more again.  Welcome back!

Hardy / Re: Summer cleaning

I had the same kind of build up on my Hardy.  I got the grates out and the I beam and just chipped off the stuff with a screw driver.  It worked just fine.  I got a few big chunks.  I was real careful not to beat against the metal.  You definately want a good respirator when cleaning them out!

Do you have a hot water loop?  I do and it autofills the tank.  If you could hook that up you wouldn't have to worry about it.

However, in most cases I try to do things right.  If it was mine, I would remove it and caulk it then replace the installation.

I too have a pair of Muck chore boots and they are awesome.  Easy to slip on and off and really comfortable.  Best chore boots out there in my opinion.

I just bought one this season also.  It's great.  I have yet to find anything it can't split.  I love the easy start Honda motor.

The past couple 20 degree nights/40 degree days have been the first time I got to test the wood consumption of my H4.  I was shocked to see how little wood it burned.  Yesterday, I put in six 8-10" thick silver maple logs in a 24 hour period heating my 2500 sq foot home to 75 degrees.  I am pretty happy about that.  I usually burn more than with my fireplace insert heating one room in the years past.

As for smoke, I only really notice it when I burn green wood (looks like Scott's picture).  Seasoned wood is the best way to go and I don't notice much smoke at all.

I haven't noticed that in my H4, are you using the different grates?

I am unsure what qualifies as "nasty" and still uncertain what warrants a good cleaning.  I've had mine going a week now and it's got black gunk around the inside of the door about 1/4" thick.  Gets all over my gloves when loading.  It's easy to scrape off.  I noticed at the top I see little bumps of creosote.  I have been burning softwood mostly this week.  It is seasoned.  I will say there hasn't been a lot of heat load this week either except at night when it's got down in the 40s.
