some interesting terms ,on what is a cord of wood ...c&p'ed
« on: January 15, 2015, 02:07:23 PM »

1-My understanding has always been that, although a cord is technically a content-agnostic unit of volume, a "cord of wood" was assumed to be split, loosely stacked wood. "Loosely stacked" means that it is stacked, but no specific effort is made to puzzle-piece the wood together to remove air gaps.  2- father talked of selling cord-wood delivered for $10.00 a cord in 1927. One customer would split some sticks down to kindling size and drive them into the pile trying to get a "Solid" cord of wood.  3-back when Abe Lincoln was cutting and splitting wood, a cord was 4' x 4' x 8' "stacked tightly enough so that a squirrel could get through, but the cat chasing him could not".
4-rule of thumb is a 4x4x8 pile of rounds will grow abut 10% after splitting/stacking. In processing wood, every step from tree to a finished split adds more air to the pile. 5- If I split the wood and stack it I can get an easy 3 cords, if I stack rounds, I am getting about 2 and 1/4  6- To get the most wood for your money when buying firewood, buy it 'in the round'. A measured cord of rounds will produce a full cord of splits and some left over (about 10%)  7- The modern definition of a cord that is almost universal in all Weights and Measures regulations is 4'x4'x8' of tightly stacked wood OR 128 Cu Ft .............. MY SELF I DEMAND MY CORD WOOD DELIVERED SPLIT AND STACKED LIKE SO >

I just have a heaping pile of wood and move it with the skid loader when I need more by the stove. This spring I will stack it by the stove so it dries better.

Most of my wood comes in tree length 8 cord loads or by weight on big tractor trailers loads but if i buy or sell it will measure 4 x 4 x 8 or 2 ft cut rounds i think it is the best for both parties

A face cord is typically 16"x4'x8'.  Will a face cord fit in the back of my pickup truck?  I have a 5.5' bed.  How full will the bed be?

Where I'm at, people are advertising $60-80$ per face cord.  Since I've never purchased anything other than a semi load of 8' logs, I want to know if a true face cord will fit in the back of my truck in case I want to buy a face cord.  Hate to have to make 2 trips.

A face cord will fit in a pickup truck pretty easy.

Here's the problem with the term face cord.  There is no true meaning other than it's a stack of wood that is 4' tall by 8' long by whatever length it is cut.  The third dimension could be anything.  Around my parts (South Jersey) only the scam artists use the term face cord but only after being questioned on why their so called cord is so far from 128 cubic feet.

I've always known a face cord to be 1/3 of a cord... or 4'x8'x16".  For a good laugh, watch this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLICD83B_qg

If it comes in on a tri x 8 cord load 135x8=1080
If it comes on a big tractor trailers its the weight of load ÷ 5000lbs = amount of cords x135
