Title: What kind of wood is this?
Post by: aarmga on March 15, 2017, 02:00:55 PM
Does anybody know what kind of wood this is?  It is extremely dense and heavy.  Burns extremely hot with little smoke and leaves a very bright orange coal bed, so hot my ash pan was glowing orange.

Here is a closer picture of the bark.  I tried putting up high quality pictures but the site won't let me.

The color of the wood almost looks like ironwood but the bark is wrong. The bark almost looks like honey locust but the color of the wood itself is wrong.

Would it be hickory?

It is hard to tell the actual color in the pics. My guess would have been black walnut from the pics.

Definitely not black walnut... I have a pile of that and it's much darker in the center.  I've never seen this before but it seems to grow by the water.  Father in law cut up a trailer load and it only was about 12" at the base.  I left it lay for the year but it's almost better burning than anything else I've ever used before.  It is a very light tan bark

This is what I have for black walnut.  Notice the bark is also very thick compared to that other stuff.  It seems to be impossible to find any info online about this.

Here is another pic of a different section of the same tree

Maybe it's a hybrid lol

RSI if you ever get up to the central Wisconsin area for any reason let me know.  I want u to take a firebox or 2 worth of this wood to burn.  You can tell me what u think of it.  It cuts really hard with a chainsaw as well, in the splitter it pops right in half.

I don't get up that way very often. If you still want to take a look at the HeatMaster G series, I have all models in stock right currently.

It looks like Black locust. There are actually quite a few different locusts out there but I burnt black locust for a couple of years. Doesn't get real big in diameter, hard on chains, burns hotter than heck and very good heat value.

Sounds exactly like what I have!  I'm gonna look it up.  Thanks!

Any old leaves on the ground nearby?
Might have to wait till summer and check leaves online?
Nice to have that high heat wood, that splits easy.

Yeah, that's locust alright. Best firewood out there. Only thing hotter is coal!

Hard on a chain tho. Especially if you find one 75 years old and 12" diameter on a rocky ridge.  :)

I agree that that looks like black locust to me as well. I had some oak sawn for some boat ribs and the guy with the saw mill gave me a couple boards that he said were black locust. They made some really pretty shelves for my dads kitchen.

It is some crazy good burning wood.  Don't think either me or the father in law knew what it was.  I got it in log sections and the bottom of the tree is about 10-12".  When I went to cut it I thought I may have had a dull chain on at first.  Nope cut through the maple like butter.   I wish I had more of this stuff, it burns so hot and long.  Even my ash pan was glowing orange.

Thanks for all the input fellas, I appreciate it!
