Storage tank and seperate wood fired heat exchanger idea
« on: January 25, 2014, 08:29:46 PM »

I am looking to build some type of wood fired water boiler to heat my home. I have looked and looked for tanks and materials and come up short. I got to thinking about some Hamilton hot water heaters that I work on from time to time. Seperate gas fired heat exchanger, seperate staorage tank. Has anybody ever tried to just use a 50 or 80 gallon electric water heater tank and make a heat exchanger out of a simple wood burning stove? With the elements removed the bungs for the elements could be used to circulate the water to and from the fire and the normal output/input to circulate to the house. The big question is the construction of the heat exchanger in the stove. With the tank already being insulated, it would not take much to get that part right. I am really needing to make this happen. I am in an all electric house and the local REMC power company is KILLING me. Thank in advance for any help!
