Diagrams of primary/secondary loops
« on: February 25, 2016, 09:31:47 PM »

Had a member who sent me a message asking about primary and secondary loops.

I snapped a few pictures of what I put together downstairs with diagrams.

All elbows are long radius to reduce flow restrictions. Also when purchasing valves make sure they are full port ball valves.

Ideally if your using a side arm it would be first in your loop as it requires the hottest water, with a flat plate though the heat transfer is more efficient. If I really wanted my domestic hot water first it would have required moving the water heater, the gas line, the vent, changing all the existing domestic plumbing….

Wasn’t worth it.

First picture is of the secondary snow melt loop. Which is actually the last thing on the primary loop as I only need 70-80 degree water to keep the sidewalk snow free and dry most of the time.

Second picture is of the secondary loop to the furnace heat exchanger.

Lastly is a close up of the ball valves with drains for flushing your FPH.

When first starting up your system, bleed the first secondary loop, then the next and the next. In the future if you need to change anything close the isolation valves on your secondary pumps to keep any air from getting in that loop. The first secondary loop is the one closet to the boiler in your circuit.

For my domestic hot water I used a twenty plate FPH and placed the T’s further apart to allow a little ghost flow thru it, if you want some ghost flow the internal flow check valve needs removed from the pump if it has one.

Alternatively if you don’t want to use a pump for your secondary loop for domestic hot water a mono flo T can be used instead of a pump. A mono flo T directs part of the flow from your primary loop thru the secondary loop all the time.

To control the pumps in my setup I used a Taco 4 zone switching relay from Supplyhouse.

Here is a website that gets into the details even more on flow and spacing of the T’s.

http://comfort-calc.net/primary-secondary_piping_tutorial.cfm

Be sure to check out the rest of that site, has tons of info.

Any way you can post the original pictures and diagrams again?

Also the link to comfort calc doesn't seem to work.

Unfortunately looks like the Comfort-calc domain has expired.

As much as I hate google, I may have to transfer all the pictures there then fix the links. Or I may try amazon drive again.

Good looks like Amazon Drive will work as well, I hate google. Their mail is stupid and I’m sure when the machines rise up and slaughter us all Google will have played a large part in it.

Fixed the links, I will see if I saved the original pictures somewhere else with the diagrams. Or I may give Photobucket a big yuck fou and just download my photos from their site and slap em on Amazon drive.

The pictures are not working on my end? It just shows a little white box where the picture would be.

Yah I boo booed, moved em into a separate heatmaster folder after I posted em here, just like Photobucket, if you move em the link breaks.

I’ll fix again.

Amazon Drive obviously aint gonna work either, I’ve fixed it three different times today, it works as long as I leave the original tabs open I copied the address from, close those tabs and it breaks again.

I really hope who ever decided to hold our photos hostage on Photobucket gets castrated by a weed eater.

Okay, officially Amazon Drive does not support third party hosting of images, technically Google doesn’t either, as those could possibly break at any time. Flickr does if you leave the link in that takes you back to Flickr, this is up in the air as Verizon bought Yahoo which owns Flickr, those links may break at anytime if Verizon or Yahoo decides to be c*nts like Photobucket. I’m seriously tempted to use some of the space I have left for the hosting of my business site and use that for third party hosting.
