Title: bl34-44 supply line?????
Post by: GUSWHIT on November 13, 2017, 08:35:02 AM
Finally finishing my hook up.  I misplaced my directions so I have been searching on line and downloaded the instruction manual for my stove.  The question I have is the instruction PDF shows the supply line coming off the top of the stove and I saw a couple of other posts that indicated that this was incorrect and the supply was supposed to come off the bottom nipples?  What have the rest of you done?  What really is correct?

If I remember correctly, they had boiling issues or poor mixing of the water pulling off the top, pull off the bottom and it those issues won’t arise.

I thought I had read that, and that Slim had chimmed in once about hooking the supply up to the bottom, but the directions I printed off still indicate to pull from the top. I'm stuck right now, may have to call unless a member chims in on how they did  their install.

My P&M dealer said to ignore the instructions: pull from the bottom of the stove.  It helps with the mixing, but also avoids sucking air in case you run low on water for any reason (leak, boil over, etc).  So that's how my 3444 is setup.

How long have you been operating your stove?  No noticeable issues?

I do have a customer with a 28-40 that's been pulling from the top for 7 years and has had no issues, but he also has a big load on it. I installed a new 28-40 a few weeks ago and pulled from the bottom, per the advice I received here and that's also performing well so far. The 28-40 at least, the manual on their site shows pulling from the bottom also. It's kind of a bugger to get the pump in there, but it fits

Yah, I just hooked up a Woodmaster 434 for somebody, they pulled from the bottom, or at least the original owner did, that lower port is a bugger cause the pump is so low. Also it was old enough I wasn’t about to get the big pipe wrench out to change anything.

That leaker I posted on FB the other day was a 434 also. Darn things sit so low anyway, we set it on top of concrete hog slats and then treated 6x6 posts under the legs also so it's a foot higher than if it were on ground level. Door height is perfect, AND there was room to get the pump underneath without it lying in the mud. Pretty precariously perched, but it works nicely so far. Per the Woodmaster 4400 manual, they wanted to pull from the bottom also so that's what I did. This particular unit had gate valves side by side down below so the connection points were both the same height anyway. Believe it or not, the gate valves even held water!

I sent a message to Portage & Main and they just got back to me with copies of the manual and a short note explaining that the pump should go to the bottom ports for the supply and the top ports for the return.  So my next step was to look at the PDF manuals he sent and guess what?  Yep, that manual on page #12 shows the supply ports on the top.  WTF!  I'm putting them on the bottom, that makes the most sense to me.

Probably got missed updating.

Got the last few parts last night, hopefully by the weekend I will have it circulating with the boiler treatment in it.  If I can get a few hours away from the kids to get it the rest of the way plumbed.

Crap!  Just remembered this morning I have to get a ground rod on it yet.  All of these little things are killing me!

Anyway, I have put in fittings all over so I could put screw in thermometers, what have you guys found that are the best bang for the buck?

I have Honeywell thermostats in the basement on my setup, they use the thermowells so easy to change, not one single one agrees with what another one says. I used some Miljoco’s on my G200 and they read amazingly close to one another with no load on.

I like the Watts temp/pressure combo gauges right from Menards. A $20 bill gets you a 3" face, rear or bottom entry gauge and I will admit the pressure sometimes differs a pound or two between gauges, but the temps are always spot on

I saw those the other day but couldn't make myself buy them because they looked kind of chinsy.  Maybe I'll get 1 and check it out before I buy  all of them.
