Central Boiler / Re: Maxim Thermal Valve leaking
« on: April 03, 2018, 02:46:30 PM »
The thermal valve is the valve that is controlled by the probe that is by the feed augor, if it gets hot, it opens the valve to release water through the burn chamber.  A mess.

Had to replace valve, it was gunked up pretty good.  Now that I have seen it done, and understand how it works, I am pretty sure I could do this the next time.  Hopefully, there won't be a next time.

Question for anybody with knowledge of thermal valves on Maxims.
My maxim 250 thermal valve activated due to some clinker build up that I missed causing a back burn, I think.  However, the thermal valve continues to drip.  Any ideas?  If I have to replace the valve, the job just became even more of a problem.  I have cleaned the stove etc, but I can't put it together until the valve is functioning properly.  I am open to all suggestions.  Thanks for any ideas in advance.

I have looked everywhere for the replacement size for the door rope on the Maxim.  I have not found it.  Anyone have any ideas, I see most of the sizes for the other models is 7/8.  Suggestions?  I have looked all through the parts catalog, so I am at a loss. :bash:

Yes, it is sidearm.  A couple of days ago, I flushed the hot water heater, and I pulled the the pressure release valve to try and make sure tube wasn't blocked.  Since then the temp and longevity of the hot water has been fantastic.

No, it is a tube type, might have to replace it, though I am going to try flushing the tank first.  Just seems to not be retaining much hot water...could even be pump on furnace, but I will work from hot water tank out.

Hello,
I think my water to water heat exchanger is shot.  A lot of mineral buildup on the outside and we seem to run out of hot water from time to time.  I am also thinking it might be time to put a new hot water heater in since I don't know how old this one is?  I am afraid that the tank has become filled with a bunch of sediment, therefore cutting down on the storage space inside of the tank...any thoughts?  I also wonder if the electric hot water heater is the best way to store hot water?  Any ideas?  Thanks...

1st, How much would you burn if you didn't heat your DHW in the summer time with the 250?
2nd, how many square feet are you heating in your home?
3rd, how much are you paying per ton for the pellets?
4th, do get the pellets in the bags or bulk delivery?

Hi Big Wood and others.
Good questions all.
1: Starting in late May, early June i shut off the heat and just heat dhw, My pellet consumption drops to 1 ton for six weeks...basically i burn two tons from June through September
2: I am heating dhw, 2700 sq ft in house (3 different zones=water air exchanger in furnace plenum, radiant floor in bathroom, and three radiators in bedroom wing), and another 200 sq ft in workshop..
3:  I am paying 255 per ton, for premium hard wood pellets.
4:  50 bags per ton, and boy are my arms in great shape now.  No bulk deliver is available in the area.

I will be glad to answer any questions you can think up... :)

I am just catching up, but i can answer a few questions. I have a Maxum 250.  The Maxum has two water outlets,  My first outlet heats three zones and hot water in the house.  My second outlet goes into the garage and heats a small workshop.  I have the 48 bushel hopper.  My house is 1870's era farmhouse with extensive remodeling, not by me...the insulation is suspect or of not very good quality.

My setup for the house is run by the one pump on the furnace, and i am going to change that in a year or two, I want the water coming into a manifold and then being pumped to the different zones.

On really cold days, my furnace will run at high or medium nonstop.  My pellet consumption depends a lot on the weather. From mid December until Mid March, I can get ten to twelve days out of a ton of pellets.  In the months before and after,  I can get up to three weeks out of a ton.

Two things about the Maxum, I would strongly recommend the add on hopper, and make sure you have a good thermostat in the house.  The big hopper so you don't touch pellet bags every day.  A good thermostat, i found especially one that doesn't have large temperature swings, will help the furnace run much more efficiently for shorter time periods.  My original thermostat was allowing almost six degrees of swing, which made the furnace really work hard to get the water back to temp when it was really cold.  I had a new one installed, because I wanted to be able to use my propane furnace as an additional heat source, so the furnace runs much less at the high setting and stays in the medium setting a lot more.

I live live about ten miles from a pellet mile, so i am a great customer of the mill.  I haven't bought more than 5 tons at once, but i want to change that.  I do know that i burn between 16 and 18 tons a year.  I should also mention that I burn year round to heat my hot water.

I hope this helps guys, I will be glad to answer anymore questions if I can. :)

Mine usually runs a little hotter than that, but i am burning at four orange for pellet feed. Will soon be running even faster when it gets colder.  The temp is usually 850-900.  Draft would make a difference too, i have a twelve foot chimney.

Roger-
Central Boiler, as far as I know, doesn't offer a bigger hopper.  But they do sell longer augers, so you could use a feed silo to purchase in bulk and feed into the furnace.  Most feed silos are weather proof, so it would be okay to use for pellets.  Pellets don't like moisture... In NNY, where I am located, bulk delivery means pallets, not loose bulk.  The local mill doesn't have the bulk option.  I am not sure if I could find another around here.  I think in New England that bulk delivery is available, i am not sure on this.  I do get some savings because am I am one of their biggest retail customers, but it isn't a huge savings.

Hello gmmaxim
What is the cost of a ton of pellets roughly ?

I am paying 255 a ton...not bad, limited options around here...there are very few places that could keep me stocked with enough pellets...

gmmaxim250 - I have an E-Classic 1400 Outdoor Wood Boiler by Central Boiler.  I know there will be a time when I'll be unable to handle firewood.  I've been keeping my eye on the CB Maxim's as a future replacement.  How do you do like you unit?  Is there any cleaning (weekly, monthly, etc...) during the heating season?  Do you have a large hopper attached to it or do you have to fill it everyday?  Thanks, Roger

Roger-I really like the unit, one of the reasons is because I didn't want to be handling wood in ten years.  it is like any solid fuel furnace, i check it every day.  it needs ashes removed every week during the burning season, and a heat exchanger cleaning every two or three weeks.  I try to break it down to clean everything at the beginning and the middle of the heating season...During the summer, it can creosote up a little, but when it starts burning hotter, it will take care of that.  I do have the bigger hopper, and that saves a lot of work, it is nice to load it only once or twice a month...depending on how cold it is...it was so cold last January, that I burned through a ton in a little more than ten days.  Fortunately, it usually runs two to three weeks on a ton of pellets from mid December to late march.  After that, it will begin stretch out.  I hope this helps answer some questions...

Hi all interested pellet burners, i have been running my maxim now for just over two years now...every day, all day...so far it has performed really well, especially once i extended the chimney to twelve feet...anything i should be on the lookout for? :)

That is a good idea, I know local guy will deliver, he can do 8 tons at a time, but I don't know how much of a deal I would get...checked on line with Vermont places but I am a far piece from them.  The wife also brought up the point that coughing up 2 or 3 thousand at a time would be tough to do.  But it still beats fossil fuels.
