has anyone tried one of these.they sure look fast >:D
-
I've wanted to try one ever since I heard of them. I have a buddy who sells oak firewood and his hydraulic splitter broke down and had the opportunity to try one and he said it was the cats meow....
-
if its any thing like the electric splitter with a fly wheel that I rented in these parts since the early 90's (4000$retail)......greatest invention since sliced bread ,..PERIOD
-
And I agree they are a great little splitter friend of mine has one its lightning fast..
-
Ive owned several units..... the first one i brought was close to 23 yrs ago. I sell 100-200crds a yr it will blow your how little maintenance they require.
-
Stratton - how long have you had them last before they need replacement and if they go down are they easily repairable?
-
Thats exactly the unit that my buddy Dan lost 2 fingers with, USE CAUTION!
-
Yep, all kinds of contraptions out there to split wood with, a lot of them are a good way to hurt someone as well.

Not a chance in hell would you ever catch me using either one of them. Just watching scares the crap out of me

Same here, wonder what happens if that baler finds something it doesn't want to split?
-
Shrek, Wicked easy to fix. Keep an eye on sm bearing under rack, grease daily it will last 50-75 crds if greased. cost $13.25.... The only other problem i had yrs back was a employee bent the rack. Super split owners are saying (how the hell do you do that) but it happened.Rack and gear did not mesh after that mishap.Easy fix probably Rack $375 Gear$275 im guessing. But, i cant stress enough that the super split is a kick ass machine. 2 yrs back i sold tw6 cause of the difficulty in moving and the god awful amount of scrap it produced. just my 2 cents. Talk about death trap wood splitters, check this one out.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E4GmFX3Puo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E4GmFX3Puo)

Yep, they have a part one for that thing as well. Guy claims that he can't afford a hydraulic splitter but I guess the emergency room is free.
-
That's insane why would someone even want to try that! Scary stuff
-
that baler splitter is not really that fast
you figure the time he waits to line himself up and time putting the block on the beam,
he looks like he`s scared of the thing.
plus that big block he split all he got was toothpicks
usless, really no faster then a regular wood splitter
plus the block size is not nice.
as far as the super splitter,i still like the desigh though
much safer the that baler
no splitter is safe though.
i can think of two people who have chopped fingers off on splitter
just part of the hazzards of heating with wood
-
of ya ,and chas your right that splitter is a real piece of crap
chopped more in half the it split
:o
-
It's funny that guys looks like he has no concern of that maul head flying through is head.
-
Still like my splitter though, 179 year old maple that measured at least 58".

that baler guys a fool, I make all kinds of things ,but playing the "timing game" all with a good chance to slip and fall into it ..is not one that i think is a good idea.
-
Mapping... That things a beast! What's the max length u can split
-
I'll have to double check, I think it was a 24" cylinder, pretty sure it's not a 30". It's stout enough I placed some pressure on the wedge then stopped and picked that whole piece up and moved it with the splitter.
-
mlappin, Thanks for the pics. I've been collecting parts to build an inverted skidsteer splitter. My H-beam is 3/4 thick X 8" wide X 6 3/4" tall. My cylinder is from a special-use application and is 6 1/2" X 28" stroke. Your skidsteer looks a lot like my 763. What are your cycle times like?
-
Mines an 864, running a 5" cylinder. Unless you have the high capacity pump I'm thinking a 6 1/2" cylinder will be mighty slow. In all honesty I could have went with a 4" cylinder instead of the 5" and most likely would have been fine. I have a pressure relief valve installed and a pressure gauge in plain sight, about the only way I can blow the pressure relief valve is on a VERY gnarly piece of wood or trying to shear a piece instead of splitting it. Only time I've had the high pressure relief blow was on some very nasty walnut, flipped it from end to end and it split like a hot knife thru butter.
To set the relief I grapped a rather large chunk of burr oak and tried to shear it, when I seen everything start to flex I noted the pressure on the gauge and set it a few hundred pounds under that.
If you can find it, go with a few pieces of heavy C channel instead of an I or H beam. With the C channel I spaced the channels about five inches apart so you con look between them to see exactly where you're wedge is when splitting the more common size of wood. I used two pieces of C18.75x10 which is about the heaviest you can get without special ordering it. My stuff came from ALRO steel as drops so didn't pay near the normal price. The C is channel and the 18.75 is pounds per foot, 10 is the height.
-
I do have the high capacity pump. Ordered it that way to run snowblower and brushcutter. I have run the cylinder in and out and haven't timed it but it isn't slow, but that is running empty.
I like the idea of c channel, wish I would have thought of that before I was this far along with the H-beam. Being able to see your work would be nice.
