Equipment / Re: Ebay chainsaw parts
« on: June 21, 2019, 08:04:21 PM »
Had a big log roll over my Stihl breaking  the handle and air cleaner cover. Found the cheep replacement parts on eBay and they worked fine. Few weeks after that I ran over my stihl polesaw with the tractor. Broke the cover on the engine. Couldn’t find that on eBay so JB weld to the rescue. Took a lot of clamping and gluing individual parts but it all came back together and works fine. I really hate the sound of expensive parts breaking!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: creosote
« on: January 30, 2019, 02:08:47 PM »
In the spring when I shutdown I let the furnace cool down to 100-120 and then burn a bunch of cardboard boxes, enough to bring the temperature back to 180. Then scrape the creosote off. Through the winter there isn't much buildup in the firebox. Maybe every two weeks or so I might scrape the sides and knock the loose stuff off.

The Wall Of Shame / Re: Smashed my thumb (warning graphic image)

Dropped a big chunk of locust off the top of the woodpile on my foot a few years ago. Crushed two toes breaking them in many places. Took my boot off and stuck my foot in the snow! Got everything put away and then got called out to work. Ended up working two days before going to the doctor and then not going to work for a month after that!

About average wood use here in SE Ohio so far. Started in mid Oct and will have used 3 cord by the end of Dec. I have been burning from my odds and ends pile so far this year and it looks like it will last into Jan. Ill be glad when its gone though. tree trimmers left this wood at my neighbors and its anywhere from 8 inches to 30 inches long. mostly walnut and boxelder. I do temperature recordings each day and its been about 3 degrees colder each month this fall. Not looking forward to January and February as Ill probably burn 3 cord each month buts that's why we burn wood!

There is a small amount of flow through the valve. Mine is set up like Roger said, I can bypass the valve with a hose if I have to. A friend with a 5036 told me he just put a 200 watt light inside his one time to keep it from freezing.

Mines been in use with a side arm for going on 7 years. The tank was probably 18 years old before that.

Fire Wood / Re: Wood identification??

Not locust or honey locust. Looks a lot like Chinese elm. Several of them growing on my neighbors property, never burnt very much of it so I don't remember the burs. Probably still had the bark on it though.

I'm seeing the same thing here in SE Ohio with my 6048. I've monitored and recorded temperatures on mine for the past 5 years and have noticed my delta t has increased some this year for some unknown reason. I'm seeing the return temperatures from two baseboard heaters 20 to 30 degrees hotter this year than in the past. cleaned the dust out of them and it didn't change anything. I'm thinking I need to look in the attic and see if the insulation is gone!

HeatMaster / Re: Chimney Caps

Put a cap on mine last fall and had it plug with creosote twice. Ended up removing the screen and the band around the middle. No problems after that.

Central Boiler / Re: New Furnace Owner

My 6048 takes over 3 hours to go from 60 to 180 degrees. I don't put a lot of wood in it at a time when I first start up. I will have to add wood a couple times before its up to temperature.

Central Boiler / Re: Heat shield on 6048
« on: January 30, 2017, 05:47:30 PM »
How close to the door do you keep your logs? I try to keep mine back at least 8 to 10 inches from the inside of the door frame. My heat shields are going on 5 years old and still look like new. If the creosote on them starts to turn white then I move the fire back.
