What type of wood are you burning? How seasoned is your wood? Those are two big issues seasoned wood and burning good hardwood.

I agree with Boilerman 6048 is the way to go. Proven simple design not to much to worry about going wrong.

I have the 5036 and I heat a 1800 Square ft. house plus DHW. Take my advice if you are heating 4000 square ft house I would go with the 6048 for sure. Looking back I wish I would have went with the 6048. Don't get me wrong the 5036 does fine for me  but for 4000 square ft. I would go bigger then the 5036.

Two 4 foot sections of pipe are the norm for a central boiler that's what it comes with from the factory . I would take the  chimney cap off don't need it anyway plus they clog up with creosote. Next I would check and double check my rope seal any air going in the burn chamber is going to cause you problems. Next check the draft door aka flapper to make sure you are getting a tight seal use a flashlight at night when its closed to see if any light is coming thru could be slightly warped. Hope this helps they are very simple machines you should be able to narrow it down.

Summer months are a great time to buy a log splitter. I got mine for $600.00 on craigslist. 22 ton huskee and it has split everything I put in it no problem. As far as splitting goes I do about half split the other half logs I throw in and mix it.

Not having to put up with the hassle of keeping a fire going in the summer I'll pay the $30.00 a month to the power company.

6048 for sure I have a 5036 that heats a 2500 square foot home and DHW it doesnt even cough. If I were heating a house and barn I would go with the 6048.
