Burning coal without a shaker grate?
« on: February 13, 2015, 06:42:25 PM »

I have a hardy H-4 without shaker grate, I am wanting to burn lump coal. I found it for 70 dollars a ton. Will it be ok to burn coal only? Possibly burn some wood with it too just not as much..

I'm sure it can be done. You will just have to stir it up often as opposed to shaking the grates.

Ok. I'm going to try it maybe even this winter yet? I have done some test buckets in it and have been impressed with burn times and recovery!

Coal burns hot, would it not warp your burn chamber?

I've been burning some Bit coal but I'd like to get some lump coal.  I can't get it around here so I will have to travel for it.

You will probably have a hard time burning coal in a natural draft furnace.  It needs a lot of air to burn.

Walkerdogman,

I am in watertown and have been getting coal in new lexington. It is also $70 a ton. They will allow you to hand pick it from a pile or they will load you. The stuff is straight out of the mine and unprocessed so the large pieces are larger than a beach ball.

Its the tunnel hill road reclamation mine.

Will it hurt the stove since it doesn't have fire brick in it, to burn coal?
