Title: Comments on how Good you smell from stoking your fire.
Post by: intensedrive on January 12, 2015, 10:25:55 PM
I run a bar, in the morning i rake the coals to the front and add my wood.  Not a day goes by at work or out shopping commenting how good I smell, or comments what is that burning smell?  I'm so tired of it, I just comment run a wood stove goes with the territory.   I think it puts some people off as they comment about the burning smell.  Makes me realize how few burn with wood these days.  Are most put off by the smell or just being kind?  I'm so use to it I don't even smell it on my coat or clothes.  I prefer to shower and get dressed before attending to the stove.

I think if you burn good dry wood some will find the odor kind of pleasant but if you are burning green wood most will find it offensive. at least I find burning green wood smells more like a house that has burnt down than  that of a wift of smoke coming from a fire place.

also I agree that those of us burning wood (for total home heating or just partial) are a minority

Since I burn lots of green wood maybe I should tell them I'm a Fire Fighter... By morning its all mainly coals and a few bits of wood left.  So it would be the dry wood odor

I have a mostly worn out Carhart coat that lives in the garage and is used mostly for loading the stove before I head to work.  My theory it gets the majority of the smoke and I leave it at home before leaving for work, which is usually the last thing I do before leaving.  There are quite a few wood stoves around here, so I think quite  few are use to the slight smoky scent.

If they like the smell then great, if they think and say it is offensive then I usually say that it sure smells better than the smell of blood that it took to get their oil, that usually ends the conversation very quickly

My wife actually likes it, of course it stays outside so she really likes it.

I stoke it in the mornings before getting busy then at night before I come in for supper. Wife grew up with wood for heat anyways so she's used to it.

It's kind of a manly cologne..  I agree, I don't seem to smell it as much anymore although I know it's there..  I quit smoking years ago and sometimes when I open the door and a huge puff cloud comes out in my face I get the feeling like I just threw down a heater...  Even get a little taste in the mouth...  works for me!  My wife likes the smell too...

My wife doesn't mind at all, we have always heated with wood. She just jokes that I have to watch it if the dogs get hungry they might start chewing on my leg.

My wife thinks the wood smoke smells like a skunk.   Or, maybe something else is burning.

My feet hit the floor at 4:40am and I'm at the furnace by 4:45. Back in the house at 5am. Shower, wake the wife, eat and out of the house by 5:20. Usually don't see anyone else until mid morning, sometimes all day. Stoke again when my day is done, anywhere from 5 to 6pm this time of year.  have an old ratty coat I wear when I do stove chores so my others don't smell if I do have to see other people. I really like my winter life, solitude.

We have five girls and my wife thought it would be a great idea to have a New Years Eve party this year for kids only, 15 girls.  :o I came in from the boiler and took off my heavy sweatshirts as two girls were coming out of the mud room bathroom. One of my daughters friends said are we having smoked fish at this party?

I totally have my old jacket in the basement garage like many of you. I like the smell, lots of people comment on my smokey smell but deep down inside I know that they like it.

Haha.. I have had similar comments like is someone smoking meats?  Or last time at work someone seriously asked if something was on fire, I laughed probably my jacket.

My first year all I had was box elder and it had some mold under the bark (falling off).  That stunk so bad I had to fill before showering in the morning.  With better wood, I think I smell better and fill after showering now.  At least no one has told me I smell.....

People are too sensitive now as smoking is outlawed everywhere and we forget how much smoke stink that produced.  I don't smoke, but my dad did and his truck and jacket always smelled like smoke, but now when I am in someone's car that smokes it is hard to take.  I guess we were just more used to it back then.

Clearly EPA needs to monitor and implement smoke particle content in jackets.  >:D  :P

WHY? Wood smoke always has and always will smell far better than bloody oil!

I have a couple jackets I wear to fill the stove that I keep in the garage. One is an old work coat and the other is an old firemen coat. There is some fire protection when I toss wood into my large fire box or when it flares up when the door is open while filling it. Neither coats keeps you from smelling like a smoking gun. I asked my wife it if made me smell good and said you smell like smoke, guess I got my answer.

If smoke smells bad maybe they prefer we smell like a leaking propane tank. Beer, beans and cabbage diet can make that happen!

The first thing I do at 5:00  in the morning is fill up the boiler, walk and feed the dog. Take a shower go to work by 6.

At night I wear an old carhart hoodie with with a sock cap. If I get too much smoke on me, my wife tells me I stink, so I take another shower.

My smoky smell seems to settle in my hair.
