Definitely skip the badger pump and get the Grundfos. My Badgers have been horrible.

Soooo.... What about efficiencies ? Meaning, If I am using a 10Ke now and wanted to switch, would a G400 be enough ? Its about 1/2 the BTU output of the 10KE from what I remember in the Documents.

Would this thing just be running non stop then and burning more wood anyhow? I sure don't feel like I'm using 500kBTU of the 10K but when its super cold, it doesn't shut off much heating 3 separate space and a total of around 5000 sqft. Granted, 1/2 that # is well insulated space and kept at only 45deg.

Is this new design more or less picky on wood type, size, moisture etc ? I like the idea of the unit, just concerned that it may be more of a pain to prep the wood and all.
What about costs ? Are they expensive for the gassers ?

Thanks for sharing all your experience.

Don't you have to worry about the line set freezing ? or is this a separate house loop off the main ?

Spare pump is a good idea. I blew one out early this year and had another stop on me a couple weeks ago when it was -17 out, but I tapped it with the hammer and it took off again and has been good since. Both are under warranty. The broken one I took apart to see if there was stuff in it and it was clean. I reassembled, plugged it in and still just hummed. I bounced it on the floor and it took off running again and still runs. Definitely on the electrical side and not mechanical.
May want to try this John.

Yeah - Mountain Duck nailed it.

I lowered my temp to 175 with a 5deg dif. It overshoots by like 6deg once it shuts off. Recovery is quick. I'm just playing now with Coal only to see if I can get it to burn without wood and not go out. I've been burning wood with it pretty much like what's stated above.
This anthracite is kind of picky - but clean clean clean. hard to believe shiny little rocks can produce so much heat.
Stuff isn't super cheap however. Least not in Chitown  O0

I'm getting the hang of this. Not using any wood right now.
Pretty cool. Just experimenting.
The lack of smoke always makes me
Think it's out, but its not.
Also dialed my draft back to 1/2 way open and this has helped with it fusing together and sealing the grates.
Fun fun fun !!

Thanks Yoder - that's a great suggestion !!. Simple too  :bash: :bash: :bash:
Maybe Ill cut some blocks of oak and intermix them instead of just heaving it full on top.

John, I say go for it this season so your dialed in for next :) !!

I called HM direct last winter and got my retrofit kit for the top air draft. I waited until a nice warmer day towards the end of last heating season and installed it.
Its roughly a 2.5" square steel tube that has 90deg ends on it in opposite directions (one at the top and one at the bottom)
I had to cut a square hole with a cutoff wheel and jigsaw into the bottom of my plate at the rear of the boiler on the inside to mount it. As in understand it, some units have a plate you can remove and bolt it in, some do not. Mine was kind of a pain, but only took a couple hours to install. It basically drops this tube into the airstream in the ashpan area and directs a portion of the forced air to the top side about 16" up into the firebox.
I will say it does make a difference. I can visually see it working. That heated air instantly ignites the smoke on the top side and looks like a blow torch.
I think its worth the time it takes to install it. Ive seen less smoke than before.
The issue still remains with these units that you just don't get enough oxygen to burn all the smoke on the first cycle to make it super efficient. Which is why when you open the door it REALLY take off good and smokes way less then when the door is shut. Wish we could come up with a way to control this based on particulate matter or something.

Long story short - Get the Topside air kit !!!
 ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well I finally went and picked up the only coal they sell in my area. Its bagged Blaschak Anthracite (Rock hard and shiny) from North East Pennsylvania in the Nut size. 40lb bags and pieces are about the size of chicken nuggets :D
I bought 30 bags to play with and shook my ashes down pretty low, cleaned the ash tray, and threw on 2 bags to the hot coals. I lowered my Differential to 5deg swing from 180 and added a few pieces of wood on top. I will say that this coal lasts a very long time for the size of it but the issue Im having is that it seems to burn so hot that it fuses together and sealing off the grates if not shaken every 6-7hrs or so. I have very little smoke and the heat is amazing, almost so intense I cant keep the door open to long when its on the first couple cycles. I have had no issues with it going out but when it seals together and blacks the airflow, it slows way down and has trouble keeping temp until I still it and then it takes off again like rocket fuel. Im sure it can easily go 24hrs on a couple bags with my heat load, but trying to keep it stirred is a chore. Im wondering if a bigger size would be better ? Doesn't seem to leave many clinkers or anything.
Im also wondering if maybe slowing the airflow down might help it from reaching the fusion point ?

Maybe Ill try the softer Bituminous coal from southern IL and see how that burns. I've heard its more smoky, messy but cheaper too.

So far, not overly impressed but im sure I can make improvements. Plus it been in the Neg temps outside non stop pretty much.

Get a TM Pro  - They are awesome. The window is perfect. I've split some very serious stuff with this tool in a fraction of time it used to take me and barely any effort on my part except chain sawing into 30" chunks..

Worth every penny. Has made my life soooooooo much easier.

Good to know - Thanks for the update guys.
Funny how I used to hear "Stainless Steel" and think it was invincible to most anything. Didn't even know they made titanium Heat exchangers. Good stuff to know :)
Awesome Job Heatmaster for helping your Customers even when you may have been able to wiggle out of it. I think this speak volumes about your integrity and I for one couldn't be happier with my purchase of the 10KE and have the utmost faith in your company. I'm impressed.
Lessons learned. Time for another addendum to the installation manual :D
