Air Leak
« on: December 07, 2014, 01:35:45 PM »

I believe I have a problem with air leaking into the stove.I have ben fighting this for years and no matter what I do I feel like I make no progress. Replaced the gasket numerous times and even got a new door. I don't think the air gets cut of well between cycles, always lots of smoke coming out the stack and quick flare up when I open the door. I am burning seasoned oak and hickory, no junk. Am  I expecting to much or am I missing something? About to give up. Temp is set at 165 with a 15 degree variance.

I put "reverse pressure" to mine  while the smoke was going out the stack ....I could see EVERY spot  that  the air was going in....of course I have my boiler in a tightazz building ...u still could come up with a fan and a way to  hook it to the stove pipe/cap off etc and "blow her  in reverse ">  5 seconds latter u will see all them "holes" ..... .02cents

Take your fan off the back and access your damper flap. Little pieces of soot and ash can get around the hinge and prevent it from closing all the way. A shop vac should fix you right up.

I didn't know there was a damper flap. Is that different from the plate that opens to let air in on top of the fan?

You may have an older model, but yes, I'm referring to the flap the let's or prevents air in on the back of the stove. On my stove, it is after the fan.

I bet yours is different than CBJ's.  The new models have a flap that is seperate from the blow itself that opens when the blower turns on.

u might have to get a damper kit for you fan. or a fan a fan cover. I just ordered one online. very cheap. Sounds to me like air is still coming thru the fan after it shuts off...very common problem
