Equipment / Falling Spikes
« on: February 09, 2016, 06:54:05 AM »
I noticed that people are putting larger falling spikes on their 460 Ranchers. What's the advantage to larger beefier falling spikes? Why are the factory spikes not enough. Just curious. I really like the way they look. Been cutting wood for 45 years or so and have never put bigger falling spikes on a saw. I may want to if its practical.

Good point. I have noticed that when I overfill it seems to pile up the coals. Im trying to figure out the load that I need more and more rather than just fill it up. I have the large firebox(32x32x48) and seems like overkill when its not bone chilling cold out.

My biggest problem is hot coals falling on ground when I open the door. I like to keep my wood as close to the door as possible so the draft blower will do the most work. I'm wandering if there is something I could place under the door before I open to catch those coals. it would need to be metal, maybe a pan or bucket or something similar. I have always had a fear of a coal catching my woodpile on fire after I go in the house. I keep buckets of water handy just in case and normally just pour water on any coals that fall out if I can scoop them back up and throw in the stove. Anybody out there with a similar dilemma ?

Sounds like Im on track. I have wandered how im comparing to others with the same square footage. My house is an old Elementary school house that was bought at public aution by some other folks and remodeled to be a restaurant. Before they could get it open for business the health dept. shut their project down due to lack of septic drainage. So they then just made a house out of it and sold it at public auction again. Me and my wife just happened to be at the auction and thought we were gonna buy furniture. I think everyone was afraid of the house because of thier high heating bills the year before. (650.00-700.00) Large rooms with 11 ft ceilings. The OWB has been a problem solver on that. 120.00 per month average electric bill since I installed it 15 months ago.

How many cords does it take for your 5000 sq ft there Coolidge? I'm heating 5400 sq ft as well as my domestic hot water and using around 10-12 cord. I'm located in Ky so my climate not as extreme as the Northern states. I burn oak and hickory mostly. Keep my house 72 from one end to the other, 24 hours a day.

Had my OWB for a little over a year and looking back through my life I fought a lot of Jonas like storms in a lot of other ways. Only regret I have concerning my owb is I wished I had put one in 36 years ago. Would have saved myself enough money to have bought a farm. Amazing what we look back and wish. This being my second winter I have learnt a lot and am using a lot less wood this year. I overfilled a lot last year and ended up with the checker size charcoal peices. This year I just put what I think it needs for 12 hours. Mush better results. Last year I kept cramming her full.

Good idea there on the diamond. A drop of oil might make them last longer also

Do you put a drop of bar oil on the carbide when you sharpen? I read where some thought that made it even better

I'm ready to order me a Timberline sharpener. What sight do you all recommend and should I get all the angles that are  at extra cost? Really all I saw with is my Husqvarna rancher 460. Am I right that the 7/32 carbide cutter is what I need?  Excited to get it in. Getting an early advancement on Father's Day with a little help from me obviously. Will be a nice gift

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Jonas vs. Buford

Me and my wife named our Boiler Buford the Dragon. Old Buford been doing a good job battling winter storm Jonas. We had 1/4 inch ice and 12 inches of snow and got down to 8 above last night. Now here in Ky. That's a bad storm. Buford Not had a bit of trouble keeping up on heat. My wood pile was covered with plastic and  a little hard to pull plastic back to get wood out but all is well. Way to go Buford.
