Title: Pulled a bonehead move today
Post by: loneryder on December 16, 2012, 08:48:00 PM
Temp around 50 today so I didn't load my CB 5036 this am to let the chunks of charcoal burn down.  At dark I loaded it with wood.  There didn't seem to be any fire in there so I left the door cracked.....and forgot about it.
Went into the garage, shut the door, turned on the music, cracked a beer and waxed the truck.  About an hour later I closed up and headed to the house.  Heard this strange sound coming from the boiler area.  Water and steam was gushing out the pop-off valve on top and the temp was 212.  I sealed the door, opened the side door, turned on the space heater in the garage, and turned up the thermostat in the house to take some of the heat out.  It took awhile but it started dropping. House and garage sure were warm.  I learned several things:
Thermometer on boiler is acurate.
Pop-off valve works likes it is supposed to.
Don't leave the fricken door open.

System seems ok.  No leaks.  Surprisingly the water level didn't go down very much.
Anybody else boil theirs over?? :bash:

Sounds like something I would do.  But so far I have not pulled that one.  I have left my bypass damper on my E2300 open over night, and I have also left my combustion chamber door loose overnight before.  Neither incident caused any damage.  Felt pretty dumb both times though.

No big deal, it happens.  It doesn't hurt a thing

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who's left the by-pass door open over night.  Haven't done it with the fire box door nor the reaction chamber door, yet.  Oh, did I mention I suffer from CRS disease?   Can't Remember Sh... er, Stuff.

Good to hear.  I was worried something would warp or something.

Over 200deg is very hard on the steel.

as long as you caught it before the water level boiled to a point below the steel you should be fine.

if the water boiled away so that there was part of the firebox not covered with water than you could have warpage problems and extra strees on any uncovered (with water) welded seams. if your fire were to rage and get to this point you would have areas of the fire box that were covered with water and were at a temperature of 211 or less degrees, and the uncovered areas may heat up to extremem temps of 5, 6, or 7 hundred (maybe more) the rate of expansion would be high and cause a lot of movement of the steel, if this steel moving  were to meet a seam that was not near as hot it could cause some disaterous results.

if heated slowly and evenly steel can expand and contract a large amount and never be damaged but heat one area too fast or cool it too fast and bad things can happen in a hurry

Boiling a stove over is much different than boiling it dry....

the newer cb's have a alaram on the arm that open the stack, that would be good for the door too if it is open for a minute or two.

Been there and done that as I have left ash door open before.   Thankfully, there was no damage... just had to add alittle water.   I also turned the temp up in my garage to get heat out of furnace.

CRS is a terrible affliction , mine has progressed into CSS ( cant see sh**) without my glasses and CFS( cant find Sh**) cause I cant remember where I laid them down due to the CRS , it s a vicious circle

Mark

P.S

Be careful loading the damn thing when you really need a haircut ,Ive gotten into the bad habit of leaving the door opening with the fan running and not shutting down the switch on the side as I' m supposed to.  I came in the other night and the wife was looking at me funny and started laughing , My hair was burnt and I wound up getting a home haircut that night

During a power outage, I had boiled over once.  I lost a little water, but all was well.  I am surprised to see you hit 212.  When my power came back on the stove showed 211 for about thirty minutes.  Same stove s
As yours.

Talked to my dealer today and he said not to worry as long as there was water in it.  Temp went to 213 and water was shooting out the popoff valve.  I must have caught it early because the water was still near full.  Got rid of some creosote!!
