Title: Aquastat did not turn fan off - Boil over
Post by: jerkash on December 09, 2016, 10:53:52 AM
I know this has been asked before but I can't find the answer

My OWF has a Aquastat that turns a fan on/off and opens/closes the draft door.
I looked out the window and the OWF was running and steam was coming out of my OWF.
The Aquastat was suppose to turn the OWF off at 185 degrees.
It was at 200 degrees and still running
I got the temperature down and it now seems to be working fine.
What could have caused this?
What would have happened if I didn't catch it?
Thanks

Is it a mechanical aqua stat like a Honeywell or a digital? A second aqua stat should be added if it is mechanical and wired in series just in case the first one sticks which sometimes will happen with the older mechanical type.

It could be the electronics in the controller going bad or just the relay was stuck. If it happens again I would replace it. I am guessing what you have is something like this: http://www.supplyhouse.com/White-Rodgers-16E09-101-Electronic-Temperature-Controller-24-120-208-240-Volts-AC?gclid=Cj0KEQiA7K7CBRCrwt26v5uHs98BEiQA0JzsZ6kWjkfXNmJvZsLQfcDXBIRqheW5pCFtU46j2C6rXtEaAnI28P8HAQ

If that is what you have, you could probably replace it with a Ranco or Johnson Controls if you wanted.

I called technical support and they told me to reset it back to factory settings and then program it again.  I haven't done it yet as it is working fine now.
I saw on the Facebook page site where someone else had that problem with two different Emerson Aquastats.

Thanks for your info

Even electronic thermostats/aquastats use mechanical contacts to open or close the connections, after making contact so many times they will start to get pitted or corroded, here on the farm usually they don’t make contact at all instead of sticking shut, or they’ll get a connection thats poor enough you’ll start tripping thermal overloads or breakers.

If it’s a big enough concern a second one could be added in series so if one stick, when the other opens it still shuts off. Alternately the controller could be used to control a heavy duty relay, like one rated for 30 amps or more, something is seriously wrong if a OWB starts to pull enough juice to arc a set of 30 amp contacts.

I have a extra Emerson Digital Aquastat on hand.  Can someone tell me how to wire it up for a backup to the existing one.  Thanks

If the controller is the same as the existing, you should just be able to move all the wires over. There is probably 3 wires and a jumper wire.
If you take a picture of the wires before you unhook them you can always go back and see where they were.

Thanks RSI, but I meant how to wire two aquastats up together in case one fails.

Oh, lol.
It would depend on what kind of aquastat you use. It might be easier to just use a snap switch if you have a place to mount one. It would just go in series with the wire going to the blower/solenoid.

You are right RSI. Use a snap disc. A lot t of stove Mfg. do that and it is so simple. I was of the assumption this was a requirement for UL certification. I know there was a discussion with one mfg. on manual or auto reset and took it that it was a required item. But it's just a good simple fix anyway.
