« on: September 01, 2016, 07:47:40 PM »
There is a saw mill about 30 minutes away that sells large loads of saw dust mixed with limited wood scraps. I have heard from others that people buy this and put it into there wood boilers. I have a BL-2840 and was wondering if anyone has tried this. Just wondering if it is work me getting a load this winter to mix in with my wood.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

Portage & Main / Wood Pellets
« on: September 01, 2016, 02:55:38 PM »
I have a BL 2840 and I have been using it for two season - by far the best investment that I have ever made. I'm wondering if anyone has tried burning wood pellets in their BL? Would be interested to understand if there where any issues and what burn time were like.

Fire Wood / Are you Ready???
« on: September 30, 2015, 05:51:57 PM »
Is everyone ready for this winter season. I live in southern ontario Canada and it has been warmer then normal and haven't had to light my boiler yet. Based on the weather forecast looks like it may be two or three more weeks before I do. I have about 32 face cords of wood stacked for the winter - hoping it will be enough to last two winters - will see

Portage & Main / Ash Plugged
« on: September 29, 2015, 05:43:34 PM »
When I cleaned out my 2840 after the first season I found that most of the spaces between the firebrick where plugged with ash - I'm assuming this is why I burned more wood then i expected. It was my first season so there was a big learning curve. Before the end of the season I started to rack out the boiler really good and I had less ash build up. I'm wondering if others have had the same issue and if they have a way to clean between the bricks as the boiler is running. i was thinking of making up a tool to poke the ash and ensure everything is clean. Thoughts?

Pools & Hot Tubs / Thinking about got tub setup
« on: March 13, 2015, 04:31:56 AM »
Does anyone have any pictures or details on hooking up a hot tub to there boiler. I'm in my first year of having a boiler and I'm thinking I may want yo hook up the hit tub for next season. I'm guessing that it cost me around 80.00 a month to run the hot tube in the winter, cost of hydro in Ontario is crazy and only going up.

Portage & Main / Ash depth on BL
« on: March 06, 2015, 07:30:17 PM »
I have a bl 2840 and this is my first season. How deep do you keep the ashes in the boiler? Mine are just under the brick line where the brick stools and metal starts. I have had a hard time keeping it under the line. How are others making out ?

Fire Wood / Wood racks
« on: January 17, 2015, 06:03:34 PM »
I'm new, only had a own for three months and I'm looking at different designs for firewood racks / sheds, current I just have my wood stacked on the ground or pellets and it is not very organized. I plan to build something in the spring once I have a design. I would like to know what others do.

Portage & Main / Cleaning out air exchanger
« on: January 10, 2015, 09:05:00 PM »
Hi I have a bl 2840 and I clean up the air exchanger weekly. Is it normal to get a large amount of black power that you need to scrape off the walls and ceiling? I'm always surprised how much is in this top put of the stove.

When I perform the clean out, I scrape everything from the right side (stack) to the side that the firebox whole is on and push everything into gate firebox to burn. Usually takes me about 10 minutes din e I make sure I get it all. Also a build up on the door that I scape down as well.

I'm I doing everything right.

Portage & Main / Black chimney top
« on: January 10, 2015, 08:59:18 PM »
This is my first year and my bl 2840 chimney top is very black coming down 3 plus inches to the point that the sticker that is on the pipe is really black. Is this normal? I didn't expect to see it so black, I'll get a picture tomorrow and will try and post.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Heat Upstairs
« on: November 19, 2014, 05:10:43 PM »
I have a two story home, 11 years old so it is insulated well. Main floor is 1300 SQ feet, up stairs is 1100 sq feet and basement is 1300 sq feet and is unfinished and most heat vents are off. Since we have started using our new OWB the main floor of the house is very warm and upstairs is cooler. Something we didn't notice before when we heated with propane. Have others experienced this?

The vents on the main floor of the house feel warm when the furnace is not running, I figured than the heat from the air exchanger is  raising and keeping the main floor warmer causing the thermostat to turn the furnace fan on less, anyone have thoughts?

Portage & Main / Burn Time
« on: November 18, 2014, 04:32:34 AM »
Hi All, I have a BL2840 and I have had it only running a week. I was wondering how long others who have BL are getting for burn times?

Last night it got down to 14, with wind chill around 8, so it is getting cold here. I loaded the stove around 5:15 last night and this morning the house was still warm but the air coming out of the vents was cool. I checked the stove at 5:30 (normal time) and I was out of wood, not a bad thing since you want to burn it down anyway and my temp was only 125. I had a good load in it last night and even added a few small chucks of wood and there was a large amount still in the box around 9 when I checked on it.

My house is 11 years old and I have 2x6 walls and r40 in the ceiling, house is about 2400 sq feet two story not including the basement and that is about 1300 sq feet but it is unfinished and we don't heat it much. I live out in the open and due get high north winds.

When it gets cold I'm I going to have to load it more then twice a day?

Should I add more wood and if so how high can you stack it? I was a little over the brick line last night when I added the wood, around a wheel barrow full.

Let me know your thoughts

Portage & Main / Ash
« on: November 16, 2014, 10:01:56 AM »
Clean out my bl2840 after the first week of burning and I was shocked by how little ash there was for the clean out. I used the scope and pushed it in along each side and the middle multiple times and only got about 2/3 of a ask pail full. When I was using my wood stove I would get the same pail full in less then a week and would not be burning 24x7, really shows how well these units work!

When I did my ash clean out I was cleaned out he heat exchanger, was very little of anything up there and tried to scape down the walls in the firebox. I found the scraping hard since the top is round and the unit is very deep. Are others doing this?

I'm currently running my unit at 189 with a diff of 10 and don't seem to have much build up.

Are others doing anything else for weekly maintenance?

Fire Wood / Slab Wood
« on: November 11, 2014, 05:00:47 PM »
Is anyone burning slab wood in there OWB?

I have a mill about half hour away where I can get 3 1/2 face cords of slab wood for 60.00 and I'm thinking of going and picking up a load and use it to mix in with the wood I have cut.

What are others thoughts?

I have only had my OWB for less then a week so I'm still learning the ropes.

Thanks
