General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Temperature variation
« on: January 17, 2012, 06:29:43 PM »
Monitoring with ET-732, I record a supply temperature @ 172 and return of 169.  Without heat on, I see a 40 degree drop on return when hot water is used.  Any feedback or comments?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Burning Christmas Tree
« on: January 02, 2012, 06:47:27 PM »
First time ever, I cut up my Christmas tree and burned it in the OWB.  Wow!  I think it is more flammable than gasoline!  Threw in a bunch of limbs, turned around, got another armful, turned back around and there were flames shooting out the door like 3 feet!  This was a fir tree.

Fortunately, I still have eyebrows!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Insulate cold air return
« on: October 22, 2011, 05:50:19 PM »
My hx/air is installed on the cold air return side.

Would there be any benefit in insulating the cold air return that extends past the hx/air and to the furnace?

I have about 6 to 7 feet between the hx/air and the electric furnace.

Also, I saw a post on this forum that stated that it is not recommended to set your temp (I am assuming boiler temp) above 175 if you have the hx/air installed on the cold air return (potential damage to wiring/other parts).

Appreciate any thoughts!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Backup generator/furnace blower
« on: October 05, 2011, 09:59:49 AM »
I have a 10kW Generac backup power generator. It is too small I believe to backup my main level 2.5 ton heat pump. I was wondering though, if the furnace blower could be wired separately to the backup generator so that if the power goes out, my wood boiler can still keep the house warm. My OWB is already wired to the backup generator, so the pump will still be operational during power outage.

Can the furnace blower be wired separately? I guess the thermostat would need backup too?

Any opinions on the which investment you would do first please.

My home was built in 2008. Basement (unfinished) 1250 sq ft, main level 1250 sq ft, second level 1250 sq ft.

The main level and second level have separate Carrier heat systems. I have a HeatMasterSS MF5000E interfaced with the main level Carrier system.

The main level is heated via hx/air along with hx/water for hot water. I set the thermostat on 71 degrees and the main level stays comfortable. However, the second level, which has an open staircase, does not seem to get any heat from the main level and stays about 64 to 65 degrees in moderate outside temperatures.

I just wonder if that is what most would typically expect.

The attic has typical insulation between the framework of the second level ceiling, there is no blown-in insulation.

Would it be a better investment to get insulation blown-in to the attic, or would it just be more beneficial to add another hx/air to the attic heating system?

Thanks in advance!

Michael
