This is our first with a OWB, we have a Buck insert we used for years. So far I like the OWB, mostly because all the mess is outside. The last few days here in Tennessee we have had some snow and ice. Kinda missing the roaring fire in the house.
So do you ever miss the inside fire?
-
You mean do I miss getting wood inside, the occasional smoke, the dry air, dusting constantly and having to carry ash outside?
Not at all.
-
Before the OWB, for seven years we had a pellet/corn burner with a glass door, in the livingroom. Kinda miss seeing the open flame but I don't miss the 80 degree living room and the 65 degree bedroom, or the 55 degree finished basement. It's 74 top to bottom and end to end now.
-
Our old house used to have a wood stove with a glass door I miss seeing the flame sometimes but would always choose owb over the two.
-
I would miss a inside fire... but I left my woodstove where it was, now on sub-zero nights or Sunday evenings I have a fire just for fun. Its hard to beat the radiant heat off of an indoor woodstove.
-
My brother has an indoor glass type looking fireplace. I say he has the ambiance, but I have the heat!! I def choose the heat over the look, but I would like having an indoor fireplace just for cozy evenings and such.
Sometimes after I load the stove I'll stand and watch for a while. Close enough I guess!! :bag:

I dont miss it one bit either.. Even my wife likes the OWB...

Yes, I miss the radiant heat.
I've heated same house for 17 winters with 6 different wood appliances:
1. Woodland radiant wood stove.
2. Englander add on wood furnace.
3. US STove add on wood furnace.
4. Wadena outdoor forced air wood furnace.
5. Nature's Comfort gt-220 gasification boiler
6. P&M Optimizer 250 gasification boiler
Pros and Cons to each and every one of these units. But, the boiler makes a warm house, garage, and DHW with one fire.

We have an Elmira cookstove in the main room .
It heats the main floor only,, not the basement.
It used no wood ;D compared to the 4400 .[ok a bit sluggo] ;D
Don't miss the mess in the house, or the burning of my wrist :bash: while loading :bash:
We still use it a bit,, before and after,, we shut down the boiler.
Like the looks of it,, but love the OWB.

Nope,.... Durin' May/ early Jume, 'n September to November, the ole lady heats the riverhouse with a woodstove,...
So that means, I gotta feed two fires durin' early May, 'n from September, til she moves back to the winter home,...

never ;)

I still burn a few cords of wood in my fireplace just cause I can. Well actually that part of the house is on a slab and it's chilly even with the thermostat set at 74...its more like 67 on the floor. Who wants that??
-
Nope. We have an insert for those really cold days or when we want mood lighting.
-
That's why I have a pellet stove. Very little mess or work with all of the ambiance of having a fire inside.
-
On real cold nights I still fire up the old stove in the basement. Hell sometimes I grab a few cold ones and sit next to it with the door open and enjoy the heat they give off.
-
Heated my house for 20 years with wood stoves and when you are sitting beside them they are comforting indeed. However having the mess and fire risk 150 feet away from house and family is more comforting. Still have the stoves/fireplace and like to burn some white birch at Christmas and Thanksgiving for the wonderful smell.

I light mine on weekends for the look and smell then I remember what a PITA it was lol...

I heated my house for years with a fireplace and wood furnace in the basement. I now split poplar and bass wood cuz with the OWF I don't need the heat just the flames. I like to sit by the fire when it's snowing out or cold just for the feel. Don't miss the mess at all though
-
With my drafty house on a sub zero day I sometimes light a fire indoors in the old Vermont Stove to get the temperature up faster, but do like my OWB. I like having the indoor stove as a backup if both the power were out and my generator wasn't running.
-
60 miles west of Nashville and it hasn't been above freezing in days , last 2 nights we had 0 degrees wed night, and 8 degrees Thursday night , I find myself standing in front of it to get the warmth , However got to be careful when i have a good fire with blue flames and I open the door ive singed my hair a few times
But no I don't miss an inside stove at all , never again
-
No personal experience with an inside wood stove, however, I was at a friends place and he had his stove on. It was warm enough in the living room that we had to open a window. A bit drafty but somewhat comfortable. Then into the kitchen we went. It was freakin freezing. I thought about my OWB, connected to forced air complete with thermostat. Mine might be a bit harder on wood, but otherwise no comparison.

I had an indoor wood/oil combination furnace NEVER AGAIN
I have a fireplace insert...filled the chimney with insulation and put a water to air exchanger and a fan inside it for a little wxtra heat in the basement when the grand kids are over...never worry about one of them touching the fireplace glass and burning themselves, sleep good knowing if they stay over and are sleeping down there, they ain't gonna burn up from a fire caused by the fireplace. NO fires in the house again!
NO, I don't miss an inside fire

My house had a U.S. Stove add on furnace in it when I bought it. They had one of the 8" ducts blowing in the basement and one going to its own register by my dining room. Worked good, but bedrooms did not get much heat, not to mention the pain hauling the wood downstairs and then the ashes up. I love my set up now and would never go back.
