General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Monday morning blues
« on: April 13, 2015, 04:30:12 AM »
Wow as usual I am up at 4:30 AM and expecting a bunch of posts from over the weekend, especially from Sunday evening, was the forum down or something last night? not one new post from yesterday / last night. We had a beautiful weekend here, over 60 degrees yesterday, I trust most of you had the same and wood boilers were the last thing on your mind. We spent most of the weekend outside cleaning up the winters mess, I must say that I really dislike oak trees near my house or lawn, very soon I am going to kill 8 or 10 of them to get rid of the darn acorns, oak trees are good for 3 things, firewood, veneer logs and blisters, none of mine are good enough for veneer and I'm tired of the blisters so guess what, they will become next years firewood!

HeatMaster / First load of HeatMasters in Maine
« on: March 24, 2015, 04:28:41 AM »
Ok so as many of you know, I received my first load of stoves from HeatMaster a couple of weeks ago, I am impressed, shipping was on time, NO damaged units, great job loading guys and the driver kept in touch so I could schedule unloading here in Maine, again nice job! I got one of the MF 20,000 e models, WOW that's a boiler, I'm not sure my Cat can lift it, perhaps I can get Roger to come down with his green tractor to help out >:D we hired a local concrete form crane truck to assist in unloading as there was still a lot of snow on my unloading ramp, here is a point to be reckoned with, if you get a shipment in the winter months guys, it is a good idea to wash off the salt that has been sprayed all over the units for 2000 miles of northern roads. The finish on these units is impeccable, getting the salt off keeps them that way! I am impressed with the quality of all the units on the load especially the G series, this is a simple gasser that anybody can run, I have been running a G 200 now for just over a week and it is heating my entire complex very well, this surprises me as I have a bit over 6000 feet and about 2600 of that load is my uninsulated shop area, I am getting over a 12 hour burn with a full load of wood, no plugging of the nozzle, no bridging issues, no hot spots in the boiler, just simply a really nice operating unit and as most of you know, my wood is certainly less than desire able as it was a growing tree early fall of 2014, left as tree length until about 2 weeks ago when Dan and I cut it to length and split what needed splitting, I do see some condensation from the stack but it is purely condensation, nice clean burning unit. Stack temps, I drilled a 3/16 inch hole in the stack just above the transition to the insulated pipe and am seeing stack temps of 250 - 280 degrees so all that condensation happens just off the top of the stack about a foot, right where I like to see it.
I immediately ( next day ) delivered one of the G200s to a customer that had a Wood Doctor gasser that gave up the ghost just north or Rutland VT. So far he loves it, he never had any real issues with the WoodDoctor either but says he likes the G series better, easier to load, no smoke from the loading door, no nozzle plugs, easy controls, no sticking solenoids, and very easy cleaning of the tubes. This is a man that is 68 years old and probably still has the first 9/16 inch wrench his Dad gave him, he is very mechanically driven in fact he and his son used a 1962 Timberjack cable skidder to winch me up his icy driveway, yes there probably isn't a single bolt on that old piece of iron that they have not taken off at least once in it's 52 years of service, heck this man got 12 years out of his WoodDoctor gasser. I think that the first one in VT found a great home, if you are watching Robert, I thank you, more to come guys and gals, I hope to see many of you at the logging expo in Bangor, Me on May 15-16, it will be a great show with lots of toys to look at!

HeatMaster / Winkler Manitoba
« on: February 19, 2015, 07:44:02 PM »
OK, Flying over Winkler, My first thoughts were, man oh man why do all the major OWB manufacturers in North America have their plants located within about 3 hours of each other, HeatMaster gave me the answer today, it's simple really, the first OWB was invented right in this 3 hour region, that company as many do is long since out of business but it separated into the companies that we now have as competitors, each with it's own Ideas of the perfect OWB. Let me say that as a man who lives in the most forested state in the continental US (Maine) that seeing Winkler from the air, I don't think that Manitoba, say nothing of Winkler has enough firewood in the whole province to supply my house and garage with firewood for more than a few years, it is amazing to me to see how flat and barren of trees this area is, I guess that is a very good reason to build a boiler that burns as little wood as possible, in an absolutely frigid climate with as few issues as possible. I spent the day today touring the factory here at HeatMaster, seeing the G-400 being built in it's different stages, learning how and why the G series works, watching the Quality control checks in the assembly, talking with the employees and owners, I will say this, I am very glad that I took the trip, I am very glad that I met the owners of HeatMaster in person, that they spent lots of time with me and welcomed me in to their plant, no secrets, wander around and talk to whom you wish, they have a philosophy that I agree with wholeheartedly, if we have an issue, let's do our best to catch it and fix it here in a 70 degree factory setting and if we don't then let's take care of the customer we have before looking for a new one, WOW, I think I have heard that somewhere, wait a minute, I think I said that before!
Long story, short version guys, other than the delayed flights, no cigars for over 12 hours thanks to TSA and cramped seating on packed full planes, this has been a great trip, I am now very proud to say that I am more than happy to represent HeatMaster boilers in the Northeast region of these United States, bear with me folks on the stuff I don't know about the products, my brain ain't smart enough to take it all in in a few days but I know I will have the support of HeatMaster and it's crew. Thank You Ryan for believing in me I will not let you down!

General Discussion / Is the sheet about to hit the fan
« on: February 06, 2015, 04:46:24 AM »
I watch crude oil prices as it does effect our industry, in the past week crude has risen from below $45 per barrel to over $52 this AM, I think in July of last year it was at $105, it's all over the place,  if things go wrong some are saying that $200 per barrel would be very possible, some folks may think I want to see that for our industry, Please be assured that is not at all what I wish to see as it would cripple our economy worse than we can imagine, I believe the best way for us to stabilize our economy and our Oil market is to be independent from those world crude prices, How about calling your elected congress and asking them to truly work on America's Oil independence?

I woke up again this AM thinking about these monsters, I saw the images posted of the Pilot burned alive in a cage, I do not want to get you all fired up but I sure would like for you all to give a bit of thought to what the world is dealing with, Prayers may help but my God what can we as Human beings do to stop this insanity.

HeatMaster / Looking for Ideas
« on: January 28, 2015, 05:41:53 AM »
OK as most of you know, I will be starting with HeatMaster soon, I am very exited, I would like to get some ideas of things that you guys would like to see at the shows as we will be setting up a new burn trailer, I think the new burn boiler will be a G200 and I will have lots of room for props, in the past we have always simply dumped the heat from the burn boilers using hot air heat exchangers, such a waste of good heat! How about some fresh Ideas on how to use that heat, here are a few that I like.
HOT showers
Hot air ballon tethered to my trailer
Warm up tent
Clothes drying tent.

I also would like some input on shows that would be beneficial, if you know of a show from western NY throughout the Eastern US that you think might help get the name brand out here please let me know.
I will need.
Outside space of at least 10 foot by 20 foot
Clean 20 amp power
readily available water
Open minded show goers, preferably tradespeople.
Staff at the shows that want to do education rather than just sales

General Discussion / Better get things in order here in the Northeast
« on: January 26, 2015, 06:07:26 AM »
Looks to be a major storm headed our way this evening folks, if you aren't already prepared with extra gas for the generator, plenty of wood on hand and what you need to hunker down for a day or two, you might consider taking the day off from work to get prepared, I've got my Cat fired up and ready, GM will get the minute mount on today and the portable generator will be moved into the garage to keep it ready to go, I think I may even re fire the old Wood Doctor to be sure it's ready in the event the P+M 250 can't handle the extra load! Be well guys and BE CAREFUL!

OK guys, I spent some time cutting open the bottom of a 9 year old Wood Doctor today, it has been maintained, boiler treatment added every year and this is what I found, Slopster will be posting the pics for me! The conventional Wood Doctor typically pulls from the bottom ports which happen to be 1/3 of the way up the tank, a full 1/3 of the tank on the bottom gets almost no flow inside the tank, the sludge on the bottom was almost an inch thick and pitting/ scaling the plate to the point it looked like Swiss cheese and leaking, above the bottom ports has no pitting or scaling and looks very good, could we please take a lesson from this, bottom ports on the tank should always be as low in the tank as possible to get rid of the sludge, perhaps even coming out of the bottom itself! Thanks in advance Slopster for posting the pics, Sorry guys I work from an I pad and can't seem to figure out photobucket.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Maine DEP/EPA infiltrating our site
« on: November 22, 2014, 04:58:44 AM »
I would like to announce that on my invitation, after having what I thought was a very good training session at my home and customers homes regarding OWB operation, service, troubleshooting and installation, the Maine DEP now has at least one member on this site, I think that she has a genuine desire to learn from us here and is not looking to be our enemy. Could we all give a big shout out and welcome aboard to Jane Gilbert, I believe she is an air qualities engineer with Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Jane Please tell us a bit about yourself and the direction DEP is taking on issues related to OWB's

Well, I found out that my 7.3 litre deisel will not run with no power, we lost the alternator about 1 1/2 hours ago and tried to make it home, 1/2 hour from home the guages died and about 5 minutes later so did the 7.3 litre, sure glad I'vegot the gas stove in the camper to keep warm until my buddy Kevin shows up with booster cables!
