Plumbing / Water Treatment
« on: November 06, 2022, 12:28:37 PM »
I have a Polar G2 and when I purchased it there was a gallon of Treatment Solution 101G2 included with it. I have been using it since but it is getting very had to find here in Ontario Canada. Just wondering if anyone has used this stuff and if there is anything better that I could use. And, if changing chemicals is a big issue. Do I need to flush the system or can they be mixed ?
I am not sure about the whole mixing of chemicals thing

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Wood Shed Location

Thanks for the reply Scratch...
Great looking setup you have there, and chimney goes above the roof line. I don't know if you are familiar with Polar G2 furnace but, they only have a two foot chimney with them. I contacted Polar and they gave a very short reply but, it seems like they don't suggest that I add any length to the supplied chimney. So, that leaves me a bit confused as to the chimney... if I could add another foot or two it might be okay, but I believe I would have to start playing around with the damper controls, I don't know. The furnace works great right now and I would hate to screw that up...
I did get in touch with the building department and it seems I am allowed to build a firewood enclosure with a maximum of 161 sq ft so I can build a 16x10 without any problem. Why the different specs for a firewood enclosure I don't know but, I am not going to ask !!
The wood shed I will build will be about 8 ft in front(at the loading door) of the furnace. It will be close to 8 ft high when complete, just a sloped roof not peaked, and the stack of the furnace is about the same height. What I am concerned about is the possibility of more of an updraft situation causing the furnace to continue to heat even after the fan has shut off. Don't know if that is even an issue with these down draft gasifiers ?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Wood Shed Location
« on: June 15, 2022, 08:14:52 AM »
It's been a couple of years now with my Polar G2 and I am very happy with it. I am now looking at building a couple of sheds/roofs for my firewood. I want to build two 10x10 sheds for a couple of reasons. First, no permit required, second I will always have one years wood stored ahead. I can just work off one at a time keeping one full of wood that has been split for a year plus...
My question is with regards to location to the furnace. I would like to put one behind the furnace and the other in front but, I am concerned about any potential draft issues that may be caused by the buildings. Has anyone put sheds close to their boilers ? I have seen pictures of them covered or sheds built over them but nothing of sheds built close to the front and back. The manual states that the chimney must be higher than any portion of roof but I assume that relates to being inside a covered area.
Any thoughts ?

Polar Furnace / Re: Chimney Height on G2
« on: September 20, 2021, 08:41:38 AM »
Thanks
I even thought about a foot or maybe two. The reason I thought three feet was the price difference is minimal and I could always just remove the original two foot piece and leave the three foot piece ending up just adding a foot in total.
Just thinking....don't want to cause any issues. The furnace works great except for the odd bit of smoke every once in a while...

Polar Furnace / Chimney Height on G2
« on: September 16, 2021, 08:27:29 AM »
I have a Polar G2 furnace. I have the chimney pipe that came with the stove installed (2 foot length). I find that most times when stoking the furnace I get over run with smoke. The chimney cap tends to blow the smoke down to the top of the furnace but, I like the cap on to keep the rain and snow out when the furnace fan is off.
I was thinking of adding a length of pipe, maybe three feet, to what is there to get the smoke a bit higher above the furnace. Is it advisable to do this or will it affect by burn or cause any other issues .

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Missing Material On Inside Door
« on: August 04, 2021, 09:16:48 AM »
Thanks
I was hoping to be able to live with it. It's not a big chunk but, I didn't want to cause any damage.
We will see how it goes.
Thanks again for your input, greatly appreciated...

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Missing Material On Inside Door
« on: May 18, 2021, 08:34:18 AM »
I have a Polar G2. When cleaning up after shut down this year I see that the lower clean out door is missing a piece of the ceramic or firebrick type material in one corner. To replace it I have to buy the whole piece which is about $275 CAD plus shipping.
My question is, it is a small piece out of the lower corner, don't even know where it went, is it something that is really important and should be replaced or should I just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get any bigger. Also, I wouldn't want to have to change it out in the winter months...
I have attached a couple of pictures, hopefully they help with my description.

Plumbing / Re: Grundfos Circ Pump UPS26-99FC Seized Again
« on: April 23, 2021, 07:03:14 AM »
No I didn't. I just took the head off the pump and turned the rotor by hand a couple of times. That freed it up and its been working since. I have been turning the pumps on at night if it goes below freezing and check to make sure the pump is turning, all okay so far. Very strange.... did it to me last year too, we had a couple of power outages in the winter and on the last one the pump sized and had to do the take apart in the very cold weather. Again, once I took the head off and spun the rotor by hand it was fine.
Just makes me wonder every time the power flickers if the pump is sized. No problems with the other pump on the line circulation. It never looses a beat

Plumbing / Grundfos Circ Pump UPS26-99FC Seized Again
« on: April 21, 2021, 09:28:25 AM »
Hi
I posted last year that my UPS26-99FC circulation pump on the manifold of my Polar G2 seized. Well... I shut down my furnace for the year a week or so ago. Last night they were calling for -12C so I thought I should turn the pumps on to circulate and prevent any possible freezing. The manifold circulation pump was seized again. I had to take it off and turn by hand, it was fairly tight, to free it up. Put it back on and it starts up now. I tried stopping and starting it a few times and all is good.
I am afraid of this happening in the winter if we get a power outage. I have a Generac backup generator but it takes about 30 seconds or so of no power before it kicks in.
When I took it apart, it looked real clean with no build up of any kind that I could see but, it was sure stuck. It seems to run fine until shut down... strange.
I have a new one but I don't want to install it in case there is an issue on the furnace somehow and I screw that one up too.
Any ideas ??

The cost per kwh is 13 cents. I run the pump on the highest setting (3) thats what it came set at and thats what they say to have it set at in the manual.
I have started it at the first of every month since and it has started each time.

« on: June 20, 2020, 06:58:45 AM »Is electricity expensive where you are? I have heard some places in Canada are real cheap and some are real expensive.I didn't think that the exam pumps would take the heat from the furnace? That would be my choice if it would because electricity is not cheap here.
If it is high where you are, now would be a good time to switch to an ecm pump.
I think I will get a new one and keep this one for a spare. Clean it up as suggested and see what happens. This pump is on the back of the furnace so I don't see how I could put a ups on it.

Okay...it's been a couple of weeks now and I thought I would check my boiler circulation pump. Well, it's stuck again !!
It ran fine for a few weeks after I took it off and gave it a spin by hand. Now its been off for a couple of weeks it a no go again. We get a lot of power outages here in the winter and if I have to remove the head and spin it every time it would be a real pain. That is what caused the original problem was a power outage !!
Any ideas would be appreciated. I am thinking of getting another Grunfos UPS15-58FC but am concerned that this will be an on going problem...

Ya, it looked good and clean with no buildup inside, had a slight pink color from the water treatment but that's it. Don't know why it would do that, I guess when the power went out and then back on it wouldn't wind up. They are off now, and I will go out once a month and turn them on for a few minutes with Hope's that won't happen again. Time will tell I guess..
