Plumbing / Water Treatment

I have a Polar G2 and when I purchased it there was a gallon of Treatment Solution 101G2 included with it. I have been using it since but it is getting very had to find here in Ontario Canada. Just wondering if anyone has used this stuff and if there is anything better that I could use. And, if changing chemicals is a big issue. Do I need to flush the system or can they be mixed ?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Wood Shed Location

It's been a couple of years now with my Polar G2 and I am very happy with it. I am now looking at building a couple of sheds/roofs for my firewood. I want to build two 10x10 sheds for a couple of reasons. First, no permit required, second I will always have one years wood stored ahead. I can just work off one at a time keeping one full of wood that has been split for a year plus...
My question is with regards to location to the furnace. I would like to put one behind the furnace and the other in front but, I am concerned about any potential draft issues that may be caused by the buildings. Has anyone put sheds close to their boilers ? I have seen pictures of them covered or sheds built over them but nothing of sheds built close to the front and back. The manual states that the chimney must be higher than any portion of roof but I assume that relates to being inside a covered area.
Any thoughts ?

Polar Furnace / Chimney Height on G2

I have a Polar G2 furnace. I have the chimney pipe that came with the stove installed (2 foot length). I find that most times when stoking the furnace I get over run with smoke. The chimney cap tends to blow the smoke down to the top of the furnace but, I like the cap on to keep the rain and snow out when the furnace fan is off.
I was thinking of adding a length of pipe, maybe three feet, to what is there to get the smoke a bit higher above the furnace. Is it advisable to do this or will it affect by burn or cause any other issues .

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Missing Material On Inside Door

I have a Polar G2. When cleaning up after shut down this year I see that the lower clean out door is missing a piece of the ceramic or firebrick type material in one corner. To replace it I have to buy the whole piece which is about $275 CAD plus shipping.
My question is, it is a small piece out of the lower corner, don't even know where it went, is it something that is really important and should be replaced or should I just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get any bigger. Also, I wouldn't want to have to change it out in the winter months...
I have attached a couple of pictures, hopefully they help with my description.

Plumbing / Grundfos Circ Pump UPS26-99FC Seized Again

Hi
I posted last year that my UPS26-99FC circulation pump on the manifold of my Polar G2 seized. Well... I shut down my furnace for the year a week or so ago. Last night they were calling for -12C so I thought I should turn the pumps on to circulate and prevent any possible freezing. The manifold circulation pump was seized again. I had to take it off and turn by hand, it was fairly tight, to free it up. Put it back on and it starts up now. I tried stopping and starting it a few times and all is good.
I am afraid of this happening in the winter if we get a power outage. I have a Generac backup generator but it takes about 30 seconds or so of no power before it kicks in.
When I took it apart, it looked real clean with no build up of any kind that I could see but, it was sure stuck. It seems to run fine until shut down... strange.
I have a new one but I don't want to install it in case there is an issue on the furnace somehow and I screw that one up too.
Any ideas ??

Polar Furnace / Spring Boiler Cleanup

It's coming close to shutting down the furnace for the year. Still getting nights below freezing and close to May. Thought I would be shutting it down earlier but been a strange year.
I am wondering what the best way to remove creasote in a G2 is. I have a little around the door but not much visible elsewhere. I read the manual and it explains how to clean the fan area and other locations but not much assistance with creasote removal. Seen some removal products but don't know about using them in G2.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Plumbing / Manifold Ciculation Pump Stopped Working

Hi
I posted a similar question in the Polar forum then realized it should have been here...
I have a Grundfos UPS15-58FC on my Polar G2 furnace on the manifold. It came on the furnace from new. Last night we had a wind storm and the power flickered badly a few times before my backup generator came on. This morning I notice no heat coming from the furnace. When I went out the circulator from the furnace to the house was running but it appears the one on the manifold to circulate the water in the furnace tank was not.
This pump is only a few months old, could it be on the fritz ?
I thought maybe the capacitor on the pump but I check it and get a reading of 11.45, the capacitor is 10 uF +/-10%
Don't know what else to try, or should I just try to find another pump ?

Polar Furnace / No heat after power outage

We had some power outages last night. We have a generator so power was only out for a minute. The outage only lasted about 20 minutes. So, this morning I get up and no heat coming from the OWB. The lines from the furnace are cool. Went out and it seems the line circulation pump is working ( making normal sound) but can't hear much from the manifold circulation pump. Seams like its not working...is there a reset or something on them or how can I test the pumps ?
It seems weird, the furnace was just started for the first time in November, didn't think a pump would take a crap this soon ?
Any help would be appreciated. Have an appointment this morning and I am afraid to leave the furnace this way ?

Polar Furnace / Strange Issue With New G2

I have been using my new G2 for just over three weeks now. So far I absolutely love it. It seems to do everything I had hoped it to do and more. I am heating my home of just over 3000 sq ft and DHW. Like I said its been great with the cold start we have had to the year so far. Its has been down to 0 F at night for the past few nights and only hitting highs of between 15 - 20 degrees F through the day.
Today was up to about 20 degrees and sunny so, the sun was heating up my house by itself. After the sun started to go down, I thought I would check to situation of the wood left in the furnace because I would not like to restart it in the dark. As I was walking toward the furnace, I could hear the fan running. Then when I got to the furnace the fan was off. I could hear a slight bubbling sound. I opened the front door and the fan didn't come on, which it always has. So I went around to the control side of the furnace to have a look. The first thing I noticed is that the water was hot and that the HEAT switch was OFF. I turned it back on and the fan came on again when the door was open. The wood was fine so I left it alone.
I assume that the high limit shut the switch off but what I find strange is that if it was near high limit, why was the fan running when I went out ?
I would hazard to guess that the temperature in the house was warm enough that the heat from the boiler was not used all day except for some DHW.
Maybe I should not be stoking it in the mornings when the sun is going to shine ?
Could there be an issue or am I just worrying?

Polar Furnace / Use of Starter Sticks

I have been holding off starting up my G2 for the first time. The weather here in northern Ontario has been swinging to above normal temps, reaching 60 degrees in the daytime and down to 38 at night. They are calling for that to end tomorrow with temps dropping below freezing at night and daytime highs around 35 F. So I plan on startup tomorrow...
My question is about the fire starter sticks. I have a package left over from the last house. I used them to start the wood/electric combination furnace I had and used them for years with no problem. I actually found they were better for the furnace than using paper. When I used them in the old wood furnace I used to break off a piece about the size of a quarter and sit it on top of a piece of kindling. Worked like a charm...

Polar Furnace / Typical Startup Time/Temps

New to OWB's but I have my Polar G2 all ready to go and wondering what the norm is for start up. I live in Northern Ontario Canada and the temps are starting to cool down. We are getting down to 35 degrees F at night but has been warming up to 50 ish thru the day.
I feel that if I startup now it will only be used a little at night and maybe once or twice through the day.
Any thoughts ?

Electronics / Single thermostat two heat sources

I have looked around to try and see what others have done but everyone seems to have a slightly different configuration than mine, here we go...
I have a Polar G2 OWB, its runs into the house and to the DHW and then to a water to air exchanger in the plenum of the furnace. I am leaving the system circulating all the time with no control vales or anything.
I have a two stage propane furnace that is currently my primary heat source. I have air conditioning but no heat pump. What I want to do seems simple but is proving to be somewhat difficult. I want to make the OWB my primary source of heat and the propane as my backup. I currently have a Honeywell RTH 8500D programmable thermostat, I contacted Honeywell and they said to just change the W wire to W2 and a call for heat would make the fan come on. After some looking, I figured that the fan would come on but if the second stage of the fan kicked on the propane would kick in. I only want the propane on in an emergency type situation.
What I want is for the fan to come on with a call for heat and if the temp drops 2 or 3 degrees below the set point have the propane turn on. So, if the temp is set to 72 degrees, the OWB keeps the temperature there. If for some reason, say pump failure or run out of wood, and the temperature drops to say 69 degrees, the propane will come on.
I can't seem to make this work with this thermostat. maybe I am missing something or perhaps I am in need of a different brand/type of thermostat.
Any suggestions ?

Polar Furnace / Metal Plates in Firebox

I have pretty much got my G2 ready to go. Removed the stuff that came inside the firebox, chimney extension, rain cap, ash shovel, etc. In the bottom where four pieces of 1/8" steel about 2 feet long and 3-4 inches wide shrink wrapped together. I assume they go somehow in the firebox but would like to make sure I put them where they need to be and in the correct orientation. Anyone have a picture or a description of how they should be placed / installed ?
Also, the rain cap came with, what I call chicken wire, separately in the box. I assume it goes in the rain cap to keep mice and birds out during the off season. I see tabs on the top of the rain cap, it looks like if I bent the tabs out the top would come off and I could put the wire in from there, anyone else had a cap like this ?

Plumbing / Brass or Galvanized At Boiler

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the type of fittings to use.
I have brass or copper fittings everywhere else but I was thinking on using galvanized 1" barbed to 1" barbed to join the Logstor to the flex pipe at the boiler. These seem be be more ready available and I was wondering if it was advisable to use them.

Plumbing / Layout at back of furnace

I have a Polar G2 and I am just getting ready to install the pump at the back of the furnace. I went with a Grundfos 26-99(thanks for the input on my previous post). While I'm waiting for the pump to arrive I'm thinking of how to layout the install in the furnace.
I have LogStor pipe running up through the pad. What I'm wondering is how much should I leave sticking up and how far back should I strip the insulation. Also, for the flange and pump, should I keep the pump as close as possible to the manifold of the furnace?
I have tried looking around for some pics to give me some ideas but can't seem to find any.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.
