Okay Hardy guys, what does the aquastat setting on the H-4 set at? Mine was used when I got it and the previous owner had it set at 140. Sounded kinda low to me, so I bumped it up to 170. I have read where some stoves can be set for different hi-low temps. I don't see that option on mine. I have the factory Honeywell and it just has one adjustment screw. I have built my first fire just to play with it some and to figure out just how it works. Plus heating my DHW as a bonus. My hot water is hot but not so much I have to used the cold with it while washing my hands. Tips, tricks, and all advise is welcome. Oh, is a rain cap a necessity? Thanks Kevin

Did u pull the cover off the aquatstat???  Sometimes there is another dial in there to set differential

170 is good.   I'd use a rain cap, but that's just me

I have a Hardy H-5 and I keep mine at 175.  When we hit -10 and lower I bump it up to 180 and nothing higher.  My low end is set at 155.

you bought it used and it is set at 140...well 140 could be 170 i would take scotts advice and look for another dial "under the cover,then when i fired the stove up for teh first time i would use a candy thermometer to verify just really what that shut off temp of 140 really is. As some of those dry well  aquastats age they tend to build up some scale on the water side of the dry well and can give some false readings

I took the cover off of the aquastat and I don't see any other adjusting screws or wheels ect. It looks as though this one is set at about 15-20 temp difference. I figured this by turning the temp screw up and down. Should I buy a different aquastat?    I checked the temp of the water and when the aquastat is set at 170, the water temp is about 160-165 so thats not so bad.

if it were mine id def upgrade and maybe go with a ranco.  I love them

Scott, is there any certain model of the Ranco you would suggest? I looked at them online and they seem to be cheaper than the Honeywell thats on my stove now.
