Purchasing a OWB
« on: March 26, 2014, 11:12:31 PM »

Hi guys,
Sorry about posting another topic on which outdoor wood boiler to buy but I need some help. I have been reading lots of mixed reviews on every different boiler. I am trying to heat a house that is 1500 sqft on the top floor with a forced air furnace. The basement has a electric boiler with radiant floor heating. Total square footage is 3000.  I also would like to heat a 20' sea can with a little wall mounted space heater. I may try to heat a hot tub with it in the future. I live in a rural area so smoking out my neighbours is not an issue. I have gotten quotes from Empyre, P & M, central boiler, and heatmasteer. Can anybody help me which boiler would be suited to me and if a gasification boiler is worth it? Also I have been told that with the gasification boilers there is a lot more that can go wrong. Thanks Ron

What state do you live in?

Look at the design of those units and you will find differences.  Prioritize the differences and add up your likes.  Then you'll have your boiler.  Materials, fans, price, coal, etc.  Each one of those units has something different about it.  I landed on HM because I wanted 409 stainless, a forced air, ability to burn coal, and I liked the price.

Keep reading these threads.  Do a search on "new" or "newbie" and you'll find at least 6 threads just like what you posted that will have many more responses and detail about laying out how to choose the right unit.

Good luck!

It is good to research this subject to death. I was in the same boat and what finally made my decision was the dealer lives right up the road. I actually liked other units but one thing I do know is they won't give you any problems when it's 70 outside. It will be 10. And I can call the dealer and if he doesn't have the part he will take one off of a new one and jump through hoops to get you going. You might want to consider that.

I would start with looking at what size of Boiler you need. I would be much easier if you had in floor up and down. In floor needs much lower water temperature.
