« on: September 29, 2011, 02:30:17 PM »
Help I can't figure this one. I fill the boiler until its barely reading add but then when I heat it overflows. When it cools its way down again. Do I only use the gauge when hot?

Electronics / Wiring my thermostat
« on: September 08, 2011, 08:13:53 AM »
I currently have a propane forced air furnace. I have installed a Portage and Main ML30 with a plate exchanger for hot water and a heat exchanger in the furnace duct. The only thing I need to do is wire my thermostat. Let me start by saying I am completely inexperienced with the wiring of a furnace. My current thermostat has the following: Green wire (i assume this is the fan power) Red wire with jumper to RC (this should be power) Yellow wire (should be cooling) and White wire (should be heat). So I thought I would just jump wires from the existing red and green to the new thermostat. This allows me to manually turn on the fan, but not have it turn on based on the temperature. What can I do so that the first thermostat will kick on the fan only based on temp and the second will kick on my propane furnace as it currently does with a lower temp setting? Thanks Tony

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Any recomendations for Antifreeze
« on: September 07, 2011, 02:25:09 PM »
I am getting ready for the final step!! I need to add the water, glycol and treatment to my ML30 and I am ready to roll. I called Portage and Main today and they said to use 30% Glycol, softened water and the 1/2 gallon water treatment that comes with the stove. My question is this : Does anyone have a recomended Glycol product that is better for 1 reason or another? Thanks Tony

Plumbing / Thermostatic Mixing Valve
« on: August 21, 2011, 05:49:25 PM »
I am planning to put a 30 plate exchanger in after my hot water tank and turn my tank off in the winter. That way I can have on demand hot water. I also plan to put in a thermostatic mixing valve for safety. I have been looking at these valves and they are priced all over the place. My questions are :  How much should I be paying for one and what temperature range I want it to be rated at? Is 120 degrees enough or should I buy one that goes to 140? Thanks Tony

Plumbing / What do you think
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:12:28 PM »
Looking for a little advice on my install. I am putting in a plate exchanger to heat my water. It has 1" outlets. This works well for my 1" lines from the stove. My domestic lines are 3/4" to the water softener. Coming out of the softener they reduce to 1/2" and go into the hot water tank. I plan on putting the plate exchanger after the hot water tank and just turning power to the tank off in the winter. My question is what size lines do I need to go into my plate exchanger. Should I run 3/4" lines to my tank and then to the exchanger and then reduce them to 1/2" after. Or will 1/2" lines be sufficient? Thanks Tony

Plumbing / Bending and installation of PEX-Flex
« on: August 19, 2011, 06:37:48 PM »
Hi all. I am working on installation of my Portage and Main Ml30. I got my hands on Pexflex for the first time today, and could not believe how stiff it is. How do you bend this stuff? I am at a loss here. Thanks Tony

Plumbing / Oversizing my water to air heat exchanger
« on: June 03, 2011, 08:26:20 PM »
I am getting ready to install my Portage and Main ML30 here in a couple weeks and I need to order my heating coils. My question is can I do any harm by oversizing my exchanger? I  have to put my exchanger fairly high into my plenum due to having to be above my A coils. By the time I get above them my plenum widens out and then branches right and left. I figure I need a 130000 btu exchanger for my house ( 2000 foot ranch with partially finished basement). The ones I have seen are 18" x 18". My Plenum is 25"x 25". My question is what if I go with a 170000 btu exchanger? This would make the dimensions closer and be easier to make up the distance between the exchanger and the plenum walls. Is it better to have my exchanger take up the whole plenum or should thier be space arround it for air flow? I am having trouble picturing how to make this work so I will take all the advice I can get. Thanks Tony
