General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: gasifiers
« on: January 17, 2009, 09:00:41 AM »
What's the deal with these...?  Do they just burn the wood, and as it burns, the smoke/gas goes back down to burn the wood some more and in the process... there's less smoke?

I'm familiar with the idea of it, from making charcoal, just wasn't aware they made them into OWB's for heating your home.

Are they all their cracked up to be or what?

I know a guy that has a indoor gasifier and he hates it.

i normally get 12 hours in the real cold but the other night it was -16 F (wind chill) and i got 20 hours..let me explain
i went out just to top up the furnace so i could sleep in..at 8:30 pm i went to top up the old brute and the draft fan was running so i shut it off so as to not force any smoke or sparks out the door when i opened it (always a good thing)  i topped er up good thinking i can sleep in late (gonna have a planned headache in the morn) went back in the house and enjoyed my self, woke up at 8am and plugged in the kettle, an asprin and a coffee sounded good. then the little wife complaine that the house was not warming up much so her nagging sent me out in the cold to check (after i assured her the stove should be good yet) well i got to the stove, no noise (i'm thinking the fan aint running that means everything should be good) i looked at the temp gauge...OH MY GOD, 60 degrees what has happened..i open the door to see that not one bit of wood has burnt...DOH .i forgot to turn the blower fan on after topping up the wood..so  from  8:30 pm till 8:30 am i burnt no wood..i turned on the blower and away she went..i didn't add wood till 4 pm..that was the longest i ever went in the cold weather on one fill but i am real  sure i don't want to do it again! the little woman 1..dad 0, and a headache and more nagging (oh me)
Willie G I did the same damn thing monday night thought something was broke :bash: untill I seen I just had a brain fart fan switch is to close to light hit both of them at same time makes for a great burn time :)

Site Suggestions / Re: Get the word out
« on: January 14, 2009, 04:53:41 PM »
Put a post on Hearth.com boileroom site inviting other OWB users. I saw this site early in my shopping for info on OWB's then couldn't find it later. Maybe this will help others!!!
Good luck with that site most users there don't like OWB's

I hope this site stays around it is the first thing I check when I start up the com.

So far so good.  I am still getting 12+ hour burns with the single digit temps.  It is also nice to be able to bump up the thermostat without worrying about the propane level.
Same with me
It's nice to wave at the propane driver has he goes past the house :)

WoodMaster / Re: Wood master...leaking?
« on: December 10, 2008, 04:43:20 PM »
Woodmaster 4400 had to add water 2 times in one day.But that was only because the little flapper on the blower motor stayed open.Called the dealer and they fixed it for me everything is fine now.And there is snow on my roof.
Does anybody have a longer stack on the woodmaster the inspector for told me I had to add 4'

It is doing really well.  I put in about 3 big pieces with a handful of smaller 1" or so in diameter before I go to bed and that will last about 18-24 hours.  So far I am really pleased with the amount of wood I am using or I should that I am NOT using .
Been buring mine for 2 weeks used very little wood woodmaster 4400 the wife thinks something is wrong with it because it can go so long with out adding wood.
This is the best thing I ever bought.

I have a coworker that had to install his in the return and has had no problems to date. The hot air across the blower motor was a concern but as of now it has not caused any problems. I will tell you to make sure that the water goes into the bottom of the coil and out the top in order for it to work.

I was looking at that to and my circuit board is in there so I might have to change my mind again :bash:

i am not sure what your ductwork is like, but it is recomended that you "fill" your ductwork with rad in order to stop air flow from going around your rad and not through it, most ductwork i have seen has a larger return duct than the other, if so you will need to spend more money on enough rad to fill the bigger cavity, also it is wise to have your rad on the "clean side" of your filters so your rad is not collecting the "dust bunnies" that your filter will normally capture

The only reason for putting it on return side is that my plenum small if I do put it on the cold air side my filter will be in front of it to stop the dust bunnies

Depends on what kind of furnace you have.  If you have air conditioning you will have to put in a zone valve.

My furnace is a arcoaire with no air cond.
