General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Clothes dryer hookup

Some pictures of a blower I made up pushing hot air into the back of a dryer. Took the back panel off and located the wire going to the motor. Created a 120v jumper off that circuit to power a 250cfm fan attached to a 12x12 heatexchanger. Cut a 4" hole in back of dryer next to the air intake. Getting 165 degree air temp from the blower in the tube, more than I expected, but I don't think I'm getting enough air flow, as I think the dryer is pulling additional air and mixing pulling the actual temp in the dryer down.  I think I need to change to a 6"duck and get more air in there.
Takes 2 1/2 times as long to dry as electric now.1 1/2 hrs. vs. 30 min.

The #1 reason is customer service track records and strong dealer support networks.

There may be other Brands, but dealer track record, or at least a distributor backing a new dealer. Costumers need to know where they can expect to get support. With the coming of the gasser units, it is essential.
I see what is going on viewing other social media sites and it is so unreasonable to expect a costumer to trouble shoot his own furnace when the factory rep and other so called tech people can't figure it out or replace it. Condemning and belittling the costumer when there is a problem is just not good.
If a dealer or furnace company says they have no problems, beware. Everything that man makes will have a problem sooner or later, It's how it is resolved that sets one above another.

Just don't want to destroy this dryer. Just want it as an add on. Maybe I need to get an old dryer that still turns and add a bigger blower and force feed it.

Just checked the temps on the dryer intake using electric. Running at 225 degrees. Pretty hard to come close to matching using outdoor furnace. Fluff cycle on this dryer is max 30 min., about what it takes to dry a batch now, so doesn't look too promising.

They say when it's white your looking at 2000 degrees. What kind wood are you burning to get that? You definitely got her stroking!

That's kinda what I have in mind. Need to take the dryer apart  and see how it's configured.

I have done two like that for myself on old dryers, but they didn't last long. I'm thinking the intake puts cold air over the tumbler/fan motor and putting the coil there puts hot air on the motor.  And your right took a lot longer to dry. Trying for something better.

Anyone using a dryer on an outdoor furnace? Ideas on hooking one up?

That chimney pipe radiation would be heat that's going out the stack anyway, but it sure looks good if you got snow on the roof.

Just wondering, I know there was a change made on the G  series with the chimney, going to a solid through the roof. This was done so anyone cold extend the stack with any brand of insulated that was available to them. However insulated pipe below the roof would not have emitted as much heat as the solid. I wonder what would happen if you would reach up through the back door and wrap the chimney with some fiberglass insulation. It could be that the rest of the stove is really not losing that much heat.

d5napp, as little amount of wood as you are using for the amount of sq.ft. as you are heating just amazes me. Seems as though you can't be losing much.

We have hooked up a separate t-stat on variable speed units and know how to make them ramp up on high and keep the outdoor unit and strip off. Had a thread a while back on this forum on that, but was just looking into the way to bypass the large breaker to get all those controls to work on a low amp auto start Gen panel. I have a variable speed 5 ton air handler we changed out here now. I think I'll hook it up  and if I blow it it won't mater. If it works out I'll have a demo unit.

Just toying with a idea, Could you run a low amp (15) circuit from from the generator panel to the air handler, through a double throw 220v contactor that would separate the control board from the 60A circuit in the air handler and energize that with the line from the Gen panel. The fan relay is in the board on a lot of these units anyway and that would energize the fan as well without the strip being effected? When the contactor loses it's power from the gen panel it would automatically switch back to the 60A in the air handler. Missing anything?   If I'm thinking right this would only take a #14 wire from the Gen panel and a double throw 220v contactor.

I have run into some auto switch panels that just don't have the capacity to handle that kind of load. They are matched to the auto start generator. If you have a main double throw switch between the meter and breaker panel your good but it's manual and most add on auto start units I've seen don't have panels heavy enough to handle the heat. But when adding a outdoor furnace they want their heat on the generator. Your answer is probably right but it's over my head.

We have had a major wind storm in the east with a lot of power outages. How would you hook a electric furnace or a heatpump air handler into a generator sub panel if all you have is a 30amp panel and a 5000 watt generator (which could pull the fan only), but the air handler is run with one or two 60amp breakers in the main panel. All we want to do is run the fan and the outdoor furnace to get some heat.

I think that is something that will be continually addressed. Anytime you have a wear item you need to how it wears and then make adjustments. You need to run these things long enough to get a pattern of wear and determine the  weakest point and then see if there is a way to make that more durable. I expect replacements to get stronger over the years.
