OWB Spark Suppression or Spark Arrestor
« on: February 27, 2013, 01:07:42 PM »

An inexpensive OWB SAFETY FEATURE:

A general need for safety features is a serious problem with the DIY OWB.
The good news is that the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is practically non-existant,  but the risk of accidental fires is less remote.  A spark arrestor can help to prevent wild fires.

Here is an article for an inexpensive DIY Spark Suppressor that can help prevent sparks from escaping from the stack of your OWB.

Thanks :)
Seems to be a very low cost alternative for some situations as long as you kept up on cleaning etc.

Looks like it would work however I think the wire would burn out probably 2-3 times a year.

Which designs would require something like this?  I understand the Hardy's will throw flame/sparks out the stack - are there other stoves/designs that do so as well?

The idea in the OP is a good one.  Especially if you have a tall(er) stack, this would make replacing the spark arrestor mesh much easier.  And hardware cloth is cheap.

They all "can" do it, but under normal situations most stoves will never do that.  I intentionally clean my stove with cardboard to prevent u expected chimney fires where sparks can shoot out

My NC 325G looks rocket fueled at times. It's actually very dangerous in dry windy weather, as I've found a smoldering ashes right next to my wood pile 2 times.
