 I have replaced my anode rod almost every year (over 8 years) and of course it looks corroded since that's it's job but was wondering how chewed up is too much? Any thoughts, I am just not sure that I couldn't go further, maybe even much further, mine is usually dimpled up on the outside maybe 70 percent by the end of a season. Does the outer coating do most of the work or can most of the rod be used up?

The only experience I have had with an anode rod is in my electric water heater. The heater was 3 years old and one day the hot water started smelling like sulfer. My local plumbing store that sold me the water heater, said they had only sold 2 anode rods, mine and one other for the same reason. Best I recall the stinky rod looked used except the end away from the threads was shiney like it was new.

I have replaced mine every year and the only thing that has been left is the stub.
