Pipe dream or one flue over the electric SHAVER
« on: January 02, 2012, 11:21:35 PM »

So while sitting over at a friend's house I was discussing the issue I have in not being able to see if the old Shaver is working.  In other words, there are times where I can see smoke coming out of the flue OR if I'm really lucky, I can see the heat waves rolling out....so she came up with the idea of having some tell tail sign to inform me.

What do you guys think about this:  Someone must make a hose clamp that is 5.5" in diameter ( because all of us Shaver owners have that  odd ball sized flue pipe); take an 1/8" rod or brake line and place it along side the flue and tighten it down with the hose clamp; fasten onto the top of the rod/brake line either aluminum foil or a thin piece of tin that will flutter with the heat coming out of the flue.

This will serve three purposes:

1) Visual aid to see that furnace is operating

2) Save on trying to keep the binoculars steady while trying to look through them

3) Save on having to go outside and trudge through the foot of snow only to find out that the OWF is alive and well

Whatcha all think?  Oh and just in case...I already patented the idea.

I think that would work or you could wire a light to the same wire that kicks the fan on. Ridgekid or RSI could set you up with a high tec setup.

You could wire a light to the blower, quick and easy.

What?  So now you're saying my idea isn't quick and easy?  I know, youse guise just want to steal my nifty idea!!

Well,okay...so it wasn't so nifty.  The blower thingy is prolly a better idea, but that will h ave to wait till Spring.  Temps here by Friday up in the 40s...I will THEN wire up the Ranco.  been putting it off and this will be my last chance come Friday.  any further upgrades/improvements WILL have to wait until there is no wind and it is a balmy 50* out.

Oh wait....I just re-read what you guys suggested....this will NOT work!!!!!  My nifty idea, or rather Jean's nifty idea would be more sound.  See there are times when my blower is running and there is no wood left in the box...don't ask me, I just know this for fact.  So IF there is a fire burning in the box or hot coals/embers present, that in itself would send heat up the flue which in turn would cause air movement and thus blow the little flag around.

Okay now...further discussion .......

okay.....guess I'll be going to Menards or somewhere like that and picking up a receptacle that has a switch AND a HUGE RED light and wiring it in place of the single switch.

So much for my patent and seeing my ship sailing in.  burst bubble..... :bash:

After much consideration and more thought upon the subject matter at hand...even IF my plan would work, it won't work....due to the natural flow of the wind.    :bag:  Yeah, I know..."what in the world were you thinking?"

So I went to Home DePot today and bought a switch with a light on it.  Will wire it up sometime this week.

Hey Lug,
I went to Walley World and bought a string of LED Christmas lights and wired them into my actuator and fan. I am using the whole string for now, but when I get a chance, I'll just take a couple from the string and mount them under my eve on the OWB. I'm 95' from the house, and I can easily see them. Being LED, they don't use diddly for electricity. At our local Wal Mart, they were on sale last week for $3.00/string of 25.

Marty,

Darn it.  Ya know, I remember now seeing this posted early on and wish I would have remembered it.  I have an entire(it seems that way at last) of Christmas lights in every darn variety out in my house garage.  Old big bulbs, tiny lights and LEDS.  Wife said they were on sale so I bought them....well drat, I saw a really nice wood splitter on sale, but you don't see that out by my shop do you?

Good idea Marty.  I can always take the switch back to the dePot.  Maybe I'll wrap the ENTIRE Shaver with LEDs!!!

If you wrap your entire string around your boiler like I did your wife might ask you if you are from Wisc-tuky  Mine asked if I thought we were in Mich-tukey when she finally noticed them :photo:

Use the ones that have sequences,  it could be quite entertaining.   ;D
