Central Boiler / Re: E1450 clogged heat exchanger tubes - creosote

Thanks for reporting back. Good to know how these issues get resolved.

I'm sorta serious though. It may not be a flaw but sometimes even a good design can screw up under certain conditions. I've never looked in detail at an e-classic.
But they should offer some help regardless.

You might try something that I have used, a piece of steel snake for pulling wire in your cordless drill, use extreme caution, low speed, when it gets whipping around it can hurt but in the hole it does a great job of breaking up hard creosote and its flexible as well, a piece of metal conduit or copper can be slid over the snake to use as a hand held guide for longer ones.

Good idea!

As a separate note what caused the issue? Some other guys have dealt with this so other should have some good suggestions. How accessible is the heat exchangers? Do you have a straight shot through the hxs or do you have to deal with corners? I think some people have used diesel to free up creosote which might help you to get the tubes that are totally plugged freed up.

Wonder what suggestions Central Boiler would have if you called them? Surely they have run into this before.

Fire Wood / Re: LOG LOAD OF PINE

What kind of pine? White pine can be tough to maintain a coal bed in a gasser. Mixing with hardwood  it works ok.

You're right. I think what I'm doing adds restriction, I just try to minimize 90's, etc to keep other restrictions down. And stacking zones in order of priority and supply temp.  Seems to have enough flow judging by the Dt. But if there are a lot of high flow zones it would never work.

It's funny how many times I've seen large flat plates to minimize restriction, then a whole whack of 90's and valves on a 2 or 300' run. We saw like 20-some 90's on one basic loop a while back. Looked nice though.  :)

This is a 3x8 " 30 plate on the 110' 1" main loop. Secondary loop 3/4 Pex runs about 40' to a 5 ton heat pump with coil. Heated great. Ran about 20-25F deltaT when heat was running. Domestic gets first priority. . 140F domestic water coming out of the exchanger.
 NRF-22's running both loops.

I'm not disagreeing with RSI who is way smarter and experienced than i,  just showing what we do.

General Discussion / Re: Anyone burning a mix of coal and wood this year?
« on: February 27, 2017, 08:21:52 AM »
I burned some bituminous coal several years ago in a grated unit. Mixed with wood and doubled my burn times.
Switched to all wood come spring to stay lit.

How do you burn stoker in a unit with no grates? (The hawken 1100)

I would say 5X12 = 20 plate. 3X8 = 30 plate. Minimum. Would be more critical to have a 5X12 if your system is high flow ( above maybe 6 gpm).
I've got a 3X8 30 plate with 7 people in the house. Never run out if hot water. I've showered 17 people when we're all here at thanksgiving.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Who knows what about Heat Pumps!?
« on: February 27, 2017, 02:55:01 AM »
My guess would be the heat pump is primary, water heater with coil is secondary because the electric strip is normally secondary.
Boy, I'd hate to only have a heat pump for heat tho. I'm spoiled with my G1. :)

I've never used kitec but from what I'm seeing online it was just a particular brand of Pex al Pex. So any Pex al Pex fitting should work, I would guess. Readily available from Badger pipe or other online sellers. I'd call badger.
But from what I read the zinc in the original kitec fittings reacted with the aluminum in the Pex al Pex pipe and can permanently damage the piping. ?? Hope not in your case. There are settlements going on.

Yes, I don't see it being a residential thing for a long time.
More like sawmills, greenhouses, warehouses, etc. where you operate on return on investment.
