Also, check your local building codes before purchasing anything. Our state has adopted the Phase 2 EPA standard as their standard for anyone wanting to purchase an OWB. You CAN NOT purchase an non-phase 2 OWB in NH anymore. Our town has adopted the states standard, so when I began looking into them I first checked with our local building enforcement officer for clarity. And, let me add one more thing, have detailed information from local code officer on the setback from any building. I know that in our town the set back from the nearest building is whatever the manufacturer recommends but other manicupalities may a more strict approach.
I own a CB e-classic 1400. I absolutely love the thing. Granted it requires some attention. Because my firewood is not of the greatest quality, I have a fair amount of creocote to contend with. That's something I'm willing to do to make it operate as efficiently as possible. I love not hearing the oil furnace fire up. My oil bill would have been a bit over $5,000.00 this heating season. If I have to perform a bit of maintenance on the OWB every week or so, I feel it is worth my time and effort. My cost for the 8 cord of log length firewood was $100.00/cord. Add an addition $75.00 for the gas and oil for the chainsaw and woodsplitter and some sweat equity for stacking it, I'm heating my 1840's house for a bit under $900.00 this year. The weather in central NH over the weekend wasn't considered balmy by any stretch of the imagination. Saturday it was -10 in the morning with a windchill factor of somewhere -25 to -30. Sunday wasn't any better. But, I was toasty warm and the oil furnace did not run once. Roger
