Prices for Units?
« on: January 16, 2012, 08:53:55 AM »

I've been to the CB website and can't find prices or ratings for sq. footage for each OWB.  Can anyone help me out with that info?  My house is a 1700 sq ft two story on slab. I am building a two story 3 bay garage that will also need to be heated.  Which of the CB units would heat that sq footage and what are the prices?  Thanks

Pricing is available on their website for the units they offer. But it does not include piping, HX's ect.

Your best bet is to find a local dealer and talk to them. CB's website does offer a Dealer locator.

Also, check your local building codes before purchasing anything.  Our state has adopted the Phase 2 EPA standard as their standard for anyone wanting to purchase an OWB.  You CAN NOT purchase an non-phase 2 OWB in NH anymore.  Our town has adopted the states standard, so when I began looking into them I first checked with our local building enforcement officer for clarity.  And, let me add one more thing, have detailed information from local code officer on the setback from any building.  I know that in our town the set back from the nearest building is whatever the manufacturer recommends but other manicupalities may a more strict approach.

I own a CB e-classic 1400.  I absolutely love the thing.  Granted it requires some attention.  Because my firewood is not of the greatest quality, I have a fair amount of creocote to contend with.  That's something I'm willing to do to make it operate as efficiently as possible.  I love not hearing the oil furnace fire up.  My oil bill would have been a bit over $5,000.00 this heating season.  If I have to perform a bit of maintenance on the OWB every week or so, I feel it is worth my time and effort.  My cost for the 8 cord of log length firewood was $100.00/cord.  Add an addition $75.00 for the gas and oil for the chainsaw and woodsplitter and some sweat equity for stacking it, I'm heating my 1840's house for a bit under $900.00 this year.  The weather in central NH over the weekend wasn't considered balmy by any stretch of the imagination.  Saturday it was -10 in the morning with a windchill factor of somewhere -25 to -30.  Sunday wasn't any better. But, I was toasty warm and the oil furnace did not run once.     Roger

I've checked our new EPA laws in Indiana and once dealers are sold out of old units, it is illegal to sell any non gas units.  I think buyers have til March to purchase one of the non gas models.

Looking at about $10k for a E-Classic unit for example..Not including piping, heat exchangers etc..Also the further you put it away the more piping you need.. Over all its a big expense up front no matter what..It will pay for itself quickly as oil/gas prices continue to rise..Oh ya..Gotta like doing to wood part too.. :)

This is where i got mine from. They have info and prices on the site. I paid 7950 for my 6048 from them with a military discount and will ship to anywhere. I was told the 5036 is good for roughly 3000 sq feet and the 6048 for 6000. As of right now I'm only heating 2000 sq feet and the bigger one is doing fine. I went big cause i plan on building a bigger house in the next few years and also i dont have to fill wood as often. Friends of mine that have the 5036 tell me they fill it twice a day and i didnt want anything to do with that.

I went with the classic because it will eat anything I feed it. Hard soft wet or dry. Yes its not as efficient but to me you cant get anymore efficient then FREE wood!

I suppose that all depends where you put your boiler footage wise..Piping is not cheap as we all know..

I live in Indiana and didn't think they had passed any laws yet regarding outdoor wood furnaces. I've been wanting to get one installed for my home to cut down on the heating bill. I'm looking for dealers now and will talk to them about my options.

x2

depending on which dealer you talk to, some say they can sell the non gassers til March but many have already sold out of the non gassers and will only sell the new phase II units.  There is one stipulation in the law.  Anything over 350,000 btu does not have to meet EPA standards b/c they are considered commercial/industrial.  If you like the non gassers and don't want to mess with the new EPA regs, there are a few stoves out there that are non gassers and put out 350k btu otherwise you will be hard pressed to find a non gasser.  I know Hardy  in Evansville has a few of the H4's left but CB out of Jasper has only gassers. Hawken (Richalnd, In-Spencer Co) has the HE 2100 (350,000 btu) non gasser.  Other than those two (Hardy and Hawken), I'm not sure of any others in Southern In that are selling non gassers.
