General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: It is down to three boilers

When Shaver claims 'gassification' they use a different definition.  nice way of saying they lie >:D

Others on this board will tell you that the NC is not really either but they have one model that may be true gassification.

In Boyscouts they sent me for a skyhook.  Evidently it is a very useful device and they get loaned out a lot.

Then there was the bucket of team and the left handed tent stretcher which are also hard to get your hands on :o

I had the underground rated 12/2 left from another job and I pulled it thru the 4" ABS with the PEX.  I'm wouldn't doubt that somehow it is a code violation  >:D.

I come out of the 4" ABS with flex conduit to the OWB.  Once in the house I go to normal 12/2, but I have both circulators on the same 20A breaker.

There is nothing clean enough for this type of person.  They act like we have made no environmental progress in this country in 50 years.  Remember when rivers burned, the acid rain scare, hwne we couldn't cut old growth forests because it was spotted owl habitat ... only to learn that spotted owls preferred new growth forest.  The liberals are so beholden to these people and they have us so boxed in that it feels like no energy is acceptable except for conservation energy and PV.  And I assure you that conservation energy never ran a car.  They are ven against wind power now.  It makes noise, kills birds, and the repettitive interuption of the blades going thru the sun makes us crazy.  Noil oil line allowed from Canada, no expansion of oil drilling in Alaska, no deep water drilling in the gulf after BP, No drilling off VA coast, Fracking is bad, Coal is bad (CO2)... I hear the NRC gave its first construction permit for a nuclear reactor last month, I'm sure they are OK with that.

Wait till they try to make us use 4 stroke chain saws like they did with weedwackers and lawnmowers in California.  But I rant.

Again, send her to Beijing, that'll recalibrate her!

Send her to Beijing were you can't see for 100 yards on a good day!  I guess she drove her electric car to the interview and it was of course charged by Solindra Panels or Wind Power from the Kennedy Compound  ::)

I bet she doesn't like the 2nd ammendment either.

Think I bought the $100 model at Lowes with adjustable heads it does 4 sizes including the 3/4 and 1" I needed.

Worked good but sometimes you have to plan ahead how you are getting the tight spaces done.

And by the way, none of this stuff is legislated by the people we actually elect.  It is:

EPA
Judicial Fiat
Executive Order (Sorry, President is elected but Executive Oreder is way out of control)
Czars (a way around the fact that our elected officials needed to approve cabinet level people).

And this thread is about the National Farm Machinery Show ... So evidently farmers still have the right to assemble.  Aint America Great!

More road tax on diesel, maybe 15 cents.

Low Sulfur requirement also increased costs

Going good, the inside door is warperd from the heat which I expect is normal.  It smokes when I put bad wood in it  >:D  Otherwise there is a wisp coming out when it is idling.  When running good I only see clear exhaust.  The simplicity is apealing and while there may be better boilers, I didn't have the rest of my life to research them.  I figure my payback at 3 years with a warmer house and happier wife.

That makes a payback of 1 year

Yes Bill that 4200 would do more than mine, I'd get up half way thru the night to reload it in the basement then I'd also be running the propane fireplace on the first floor.  Can't afford the air to air heat pump at $0.13.kwh.  I still run the Quad in the basement when my sweetheart wants it really warm (not enough air outlets for FHA system yet).

Love the Bentley and Eggs Benedict quote,  they are a little high brow compared to this site.  With some of the discussions about aging wood, splitiing and measuring moisture content youd swear they were talking about fine wine, not wood.

To each his own, I consider my wood as free and my time as forced exercise, my payback was much quicker with a non gassifier, maybe in a few years I'll wish otherwise but  for now I'm happy with the simplicity.

If you buy your wood, split and aged to <20% moisture, go to the gym 3x per week, have no trees on your land and close upity neighbors than it is a no brainer I guess.  That is why Bentley and Chevy are both in business I guess.

Groupthink either because the site promotes it or we seek a site that fits with what we already think.  That is why I watch NBC...NOT.

I have a Quadrafire insert and you can see it when it 'gassifies'.  Quite pretty and impressive when you consider that much of the burn above the wood would not occur in a normal insert.  But when I don't load it correctly or damp it back it smokes just like any other fire that isn't burning correctly.  And it really doesn't make much heat when you try to get it to burn 8 hrs and it surely doesn't distribute the heat and make the house comfortable.  When I've burnt bad quality wood in it I alway run it close to wide open and i've never had a cleaning issue.  But it doesn't do a burn, idle, burn, idle cycle which is where smoke and buildup is introduced.

That being said, I am quite happy with my classic OWB in year 2.

It is about the compromises you are willing to make and educating yourself so you know you are making them.

Yes, round fireboxes have less welds to fail but functionally is ound the best firebox?

Yes, the new gassifiers are more efficient but how will they last?  Are they picky about wood quality?  Higher maintenance?

Shaker grates or no shaker grates ...

Stainless in theory has stress corrosion cracking but there are many stainless units lasting for 15 years plus (maybe the quality of the stainless)

Read away, try to understand, but don't let the little things get in the way of a general good decision.

Plumbing / Re: New guy needing help

Yes the water returning does act as a syphon so long as you get the air out.  So head is NOT lift height like you would calculate if you were pumping the water up to the top floor bath tub.  Head is only a frictional resistance that takes into account length of run, resistance of pipe used plus any valve and fitting resistance (90's etc).

You need to get, and keep your return line full of water.  You can't have small air leaks in the return line or the water column will fall back into your boiler and your circulator may not have the ability to push the coulumn up to get things going again.

If you poke around on the site you will find a link for head loss calculations for 1" PEX and fittings, but I doubt you have any problem.

Don't be too proud to accept other peoples help.  It gives them satisfaction and is the right thing to do for our brothers.
