Plumbing / Cleaning plate exchanger
« on: November 03, 2021, 11:38:23 AM »
I have a 10 plate exchanger in my shop basically so I can have hot water to wash my hands in! Its fed with raw unsoftened water from my well so its pretty crappy water. In the past I have flushed CLR through it to clean it out with good results. Well now its almost completely plugged. IS there anything that would clean it better that wouldn't harm the exchanger? Its currently soaking with CLR so I'm hoping it will eventually break somewhat loose.

I have used a small marine bilge pump and 12V power adapter to pump CLR through the hot water side of my flat plate heat exchanger while its in operation before.

I had to replace the damper flap a coup[le years ago also. Had to spend quite a bit of time with a honing stone to get the surface on the door trued up. I think the new flaps are stainless steel.

My 6048 will get condensation on the damper door especially when its real cold. I learned to keep the fire closer to the front. Also I soak the door gasket with PB blaster at least once a week. Going on its 9th year and still looks new. I don't burn through the summer though.

About a week ago I turned the heat side off, just heating hot water until I get ready to shut down. Had to turn the heat back on this morning also. Cold damp rain here. I wonder if summer is ever going to get here?

That's 3 1/2 weeks of firewood you didn't have to cut and split!

I've had a couple Taco pump impellers disintegrate last year. Kind of wish I had a wye strainer to capture the pieces rather than wonder where they ended up.

Made mine out of some 3/8 rod and 3/4 conduit for a handle.
