Did adding a OWB increase or decrease your power bill?
« on: December 03, 2014, 10:12:42 PM »

Got my first electric bill since I installed and fired up the boiler. Not complaining by any means but seems that adding the boiler increased it by $14 for one month. Was thinking and hoping that since the burner and fuel oil pump on the fuel oil boiler wouldn't be running the circulation pump and fan on the OWB would cancel eachother out, but guess thats not the case. The zone valves and pumps are probably working a bit more on the indoor side of things seeing as the water temp runs 20 degrees cooler than it would running on fuel oil. Water heater is propane and even the pilot light has been turned off for over a month so no gas usage there.

My electric bill increases almost double from $30.00/month in the non-heating season to $60.00/month through the heating season.  I'm not complaining at all because it is much cheaper to heat my house with the OWB compared to the oil burner.  I was paying out over $5,100.00 a year for fuel oil.  I can live with paying out $150.00 more over 5 months.  If anyone wonders what circ I have is it's a taco 009-F5 at the OWB.  Roger

My house was heated with and older HVAC which only has strip heat and an OWB.

My Father-In-Law installed gas logs to supplement.

If I used the strip heat I'd be pushing $6-700.00/mnth.
Running the OWB, I'm at $250-300/mnth.

This is a 3,500sqft +/- block house.

My electric bill dropped $40 from last year at this time.  Last year I was heating with an indoor forced air wood furnace that has an 850 CFM fan which ran almost 24/7.  I also have an electric 50 gallon water heater which I flipped the breaker off to since I installed the sidearm.  I am running a 3 stage grundfos 15-58 pump on medium.

Those of you that the bill went down, do you know why? What was running that currently is not with the OWB?

Pump on OWB is a Grundofos UP26-99F 1/6 HP more info here:

http://www.supplyhouse.com/Grundfos-52722355-UP26-99F-Circulator-Pump-1-6-HP-115-volt-5580000-p

I didn't keep my bills from last winter when heating with only fuel oil, but I don't recall them going up much, last bill I have is from end of last winter (march) and I think it was still cold here in northern MN.

Lights are being used more as it gets dark at 5:00, but I live alone, so its not like there is a tremendous usage.

My hot water heater is shut off, plus the oil boiler does not run at all. Honeywell pump on the stove and a taco 007 in the house. My bill is down 50-60 bucks a month.

Here is what was running last year that isn't running this year: Fan on indoor wood furnace (running constant), Electric water heater.

Here is what is running this year that wasn't running last year: Blower fan on OWB, Grundfos 15-58 pump, furnace fan(kicks on and off, thermostat controls it)

The big money saver for me is not using electricity to run my water heater.

Before Boiler:
Electric bill per month: 250 to 325
Propane bill per season: $900
Indoor pre-fab fireplace: 7-8 cord of wood. Up in middle of the night to keep fire going :o
House temp: 60-65 main floor and high 50s in second story.  Frozen pipes in basement during negative degree days  :P :bash:

Since boiler:
Electric: 150 tops
Propane: 0 (Have 120 gallon back up for insurance purposes I haven't touched)
House temp 73
Wood: 10-12 cord per season roughly.

The electric was forty dollars cheaper when my side arm was working (think I have an air lock :bash:)
:pic:how you like me now, propane and Consumers Energy

I would say $14 a month to heat your house is pretty dang good.  My bill went down only because of my water heater.  It saves me about $45 a month.
