Oil vs propane
« on: May 23, 2017, 03:56:27 AM »

So I am thinking I am going to have one of the above installed and maybe only burn wood for a few months instead of the 8 I am burning now. I would have a unit big enough to heat the shop also and keep the OWF hot via the Logstor.

Now propane doesn't have the btu output of oil, but would think an easier install?
I would buy my own tank.

Thoughts?

Buying your own tank is definitely the way to go, we owned two 1000 gallon tanks when we still had LP, pretty huge savings can be had when you can shop around, but we could burn thru several thousand gallons in no time when drying corn.

A second heat source is definitely desirable, I use waste oil in the shop for back up heat, if it’s a fluke temp swing I also have a nat gas furnace in the basement. I still end up burning wood 5 or 6 months out of the year.

Buy your own tank, no questions asked.  You can then shop around for the better priced propane instead of having to stay with a company or even a contract.  Propane prices can ranged for 20-30 cents a gallon difference around here from company to company depending on their supply and demand.
