Title: Overheating issue/question
Post by: Leever2000 on March 15, 2021, 10:05:14 AM
My OW Furnace appeared to be overheating so I took a closer look. Noticed my T&P valve stuck open (defective?) and water a little more than trickling out. The water temperature is within the normal temperature limits and just wanted to get some feedback? I believe it  is just a T&P valve replacement? Can anything else cause the issue I am seeing or does it look like a T&P valve replacement? Thanks!

After some further investigation it appears the pressure valve is releasing at a lower temp (150 - 175 degrees F). I will replace the valve.

I didn’t realize Mahonings were pressurized. If replacing the valve solves it post back so others can see the fix if they have the same issue.

mlappin - thank you for the re-direct! You are correct the Mahoning furnace is not a pressurized furnace for the heat, but I do have a secondary loop for heating my potable (pre - water heater).

I replaced the T&P valve and all is working well, the furnace has reached the operating temp and no water being dumped via the new T&P valve.

Earlier when mlappin was commenting I was out at the furnace trying to replace the T&P valve and was a little confused. I stopped and returned inside and read the mlappin comment and was no longer confused. I shut the potable water off to the furnace and replaced the defective T&P valve.

Thanks mlappin for bringing clarity!

So if I understand correctly Mahonings have a secondary coil in the water jacket to heat your domestic hot water and at the furnace is a T&P valve just like a water heater?

Yes exactly correct!

I posted in the plumbing area originally because when I looked at the Mahoning posts, I was the last to post in 2018. I figured I would get visibility.

Thanks again, day 2 with new T&P valve all working smooth!
