Title: Stop the spambots
Post by: userdk on May 21, 2015, 03:03:18 PM
Although it is usually not a big issue, spam is a big pain. Would it be possible to add a capitcha to the account creation page?

I for one would sure like to see it stopped much sooner, ever wonder why? Perhaps it could be code and used by terrorists to communicate, my buddy Dan was sitting next to me in the office one day, I got a text from his phone number that did not come from him or his phone, it was garbled much like the spammers do but did mention guns, Katar and a few other suspicious things, we immediately contacted the FBI here in Portland and sent them the text, before I could even send it they were aware of it and had it up. Nothing more was ever said. Point is, moderators before simply deleting them, perhaps it would be a good idea to read them and look for key words, if you find them, Please notify the authorities!

For example last night would have been a lot of reading garbled non sensical posts, also it seems I’m the only active moderator atm.

I see that, what's up with Slopster and Jwood?

Is there a way that you could be sent an alarm notice with a notification from another member even when you aren't online?

Possibly, I already have notifications set up on this site, they goto my Reagan email, I routinely check emails on my phone, however sometimes when I’m in my tractor I set the phone to Do Not Disturb just so I can get something done. Trying to delete spam and ban the poster from the iPhone while in the field wouldn’t be fun at best. To be honest on the other site I moderate I can’t log into admin privileges from my smart phone at all.

Actually the other mods were Slopster and Sprinter.

Oh yea that's right, my mistake, I haven't seen either of them on here recently, I hope all is ok!
Perhaps it would be wise for admin to ask for volunteers again?

We all can help by reporting spam, another method is block ALL international ip addresses and just make the site a USA site, maybe add Canada if we have Canadian members.

I was talking to an IP guy andhesaid that they are doing this for hospitals now, seems to help.

Definately want to leave Canada on board but otherwise that sounds like an excellent idea.

Been doing that with spammers who have registered, problem is still can catch legitimate members in the ban.

Also wouldn’t want to turn away new members  just because by a fluke their IP was caught in a ban.

A few things I’ve seen for certain that work to stop spam.

1: Anybody is allowed to join but new members first ten posts or replies have to be approved by a moderator before anybody else can see them. This works every time but requires active moderators who are on every day so the new member doesn’t get discouraged and leaves.

2: A much more involved registration process can be used with a questionnaire designed to weed out spammers from honest wanna be members. Again requires active moderators.

3: Same registration process is kept but before a member is approved their IP is checked against a site like StopForumSpam to see if it’s a clean IP or not, again requires active moderators.

4: Captcha, meh.  Personally I hate those.

As a start I have now required mods to approve posts from new members.
