General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Portage and Main owners

I looked and searched for an OWB for a few months before finally making my purchase of a bl 3444 this past summer.  Everytime I found a brand that sounded like they had a good thing going I changed my mind.  Then I found this forum and watched and read posts by many of you for a few weeks.  Until then I had never even heard of P & M, it was down to Central and Heatmaster who were both just under an hour away.  But reading the posts from slim, either on the P&M threads or some of the other companys threads, I realized that for a company to have someone that knowledgable to be basically stationed on forums was exactly how a company can reach out to their customers and potential customers and gain trust.  Well, it didn't take long to make my decision and drive almost 4 hours to put a down payment on my p&m and the rest is history.  This past weekend I was at the PA farm show in Harrisburg, and although there was no P&M dealer there, there were a few others and I'm really glad with the decision i made.  So heres to you slim.

So I have been reading everyone's comments and still researching other threads as well and have really been pulled towards the P&M Ultimizers.  I have a dealer about 3 hours or so away in Somerset, PA (if anyone has dealt with him before and has some feedback.  He also lists them on ebay as well) and figured it wouldn't be that bad of a drive out there to look and/or pick on up.  If I were to get one for what I have now I could easily run a 28-40 for my demand now and probably for the next 2 or 3 years. I'm figuring through my calculations I would need about 150k btu for the house and that would leave quite a bit available for DHW.  I am planning on a 30x40 fully insulated garage going up in those next 2 or 3 years that I would also like to heat.  Could I get away with the 28-40 or should I oversize now and go with the 34-44?  This was a pretty cold winter for us this past winter but I would think for most of the year I would be ok with either relying on a secondary heat on just those real cold nights.

How does the P&M do with burning coal?  Most of the posts I could find on burning coal have been from the NCB or Heatmaster.  The only thing that scares me about the NCB is the other to seem to have quite a bit better reputation. For Customer Service/warranty if needed.

Hey I was wondering if anyone can help me out with getting a boiler in NE PA.  I'm looking to burn coal for a good part of the winter and some wood in the spring and fall.  I kind of have it nailed down to the Heatmaster 5000e or the Natures Comfort NCB-250 COAL unit.  Dealers around my area kind of lackluster in their attempt to sell a boiler (more like I'll put a sign by the road and hope someone buys one.)  I'm not sure if having one shipped up could be the option or if driving a couple hours to pick one up is going to be the route I end up going.  If anyone can help me out please send me a PM or let me know.  Thanks

Natures Comfort / NCB 250 Coal
« on: May 31, 2014, 11:05:45 AM »
I have been reading and researching for a few months and think I finally decided on a new Natures Comfort boiler.  Im heating a 2500 sq ft old farmhouse which im also in the process of remodeling and insulating.  In the next few years there will be a garage and workshop going up and would like to heat that as well (hopefully with a finished room above for a man cave .)    I figure the ncb 250 would handle this demand but im unsure if have the boiler well oversized for a few years will give me issues until the garage goes up.  My other question is much trouble is it to switch from wood to coal in the coal units?  My plan would be to burn wood in the spring through the fall and switch to coal in the winter.  I live in northeast pa which is anthracite country, which i used to burn in my other house, but i also have a pretty endless supply of wood, which i burned in an alaskan wood stove this past year.  I went through 8 or 9 cord and really wish i had a boiler to heat my entire house instead of having my 1st floor at 80 and the farthest bedroom upstairs at 65.  The way it looks ill be traveling about 3 and a half hours to the dealer since he was the only one that actually got back to me.   Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.
