Portage & Main / Pulled the Trigger on a New BL 34-44
« on: February 25, 2014, 08:09:10 AM »
I just wanted to communicate that I have decided to "pull the trigger" on purchasing a Portage & Main Ultimizer BL 34-44 for my home.  I am just full of excitement at present.  ;D 8)  My Portage & Main dealer Brian Cooper is going to help me with a good design layout for the uniqueness of my 5900 sq. ft. "open concept" home.  I will post some pictures when the unit arrives at my dealer in the coming weeks.  I intend to make an internet blog of sorts here in the Portage & Main sub-forum in order to document my installation (performing myself with design primarily originating from my dealer,,,, that is my intent any way).

Big thanks to slimjim, martyinmi, karlk, merrellroofing, and CountryBoyJohn for all the advice and helping guide me to what I believe will be the best OWB for my particular home.

More posts and pictures  :photo: to come as the process "develops."

Plumbing / Fittings for Logstor Dual PEX-Flex Piping?
« on: February 25, 2014, 04:46:20 AM »
Perhaps a silly question but.... does Logstor PEX-Flex insulated piping ship with any wall entry sleeves (for pipe through concrete and/or masonry) or end caps for the terminal ends of the pipe (protect against water ingress through the exposed polyurethane insulation)?

The particular fittings I am referring to are the Logstor fittings at the following link.

LINKLogstor Terminations (Click Here to Open .pdf file)

If Logstor termination fittings are not included with purchased Logstor Dual Pex-Flex piping, where does one purchase these items?

Cheers! -Slopster

Portage & Main / Ultimizer or Optimizer?
« on: February 12, 2014, 01:57:02 PM »
Alright, first let me say that I live in Indiana and appear to forced to use an EPA Phase II wood burning furnace/gasifier.

....BUT if I were not (or lived in a state without restrictions), which P&M unit would best be seved to heat 4,300 sq ft 5,900 sq. ft. with a built in 3-car garage, Ultimizer or Optimizer?  (your opinion and why)

Both units look top notch construction to me but honestly, the Optimizer seems to be a little more "involved" keeping it running in good order.  In particular, I have read nearly every post in this P&M sub-forum and have identified a short list of items (concerns?):

  • Higher wood consumption level for an Ultimizer (compared to optimizer)
  • Increased potential for weld failures due to the multiple Scotch heat exchanger tubes through the waterjacket
  • Increased sensitivity of the Optimizer using 2-year seasoned wood (moisture content <20%)
  • Nozzle erosion for the Optimizer
  • More limited access to the water jacket for firebox for welding repairs (if ever needed)
  • Longer burn times for the Ultimizer (not sure if this is true or not) when heating the same structure

Am I completely off base here or what?  :o  Please help set my mind straight.  8)

I would love to hear comments from Ultimizer owners, P&M dealers, Optimizer owners, and general "smart guys of wood heating."

Thank you wood burners!  -Slopster

Plumbing / Trees and Underground Logstor Dual PexFlex Piping
« on: February 11, 2014, 11:30:31 AM »
Hello guys....  nOObie here (but I am the son of a retired 45-year veteran plumber).

Prepping for a Portage and Main Optimizer 250 installation.  I have a 50-feet run for Logstor dual pexflex to dig but am concerned about a few large trees (75' + white oaks) within 8 feet of where I want to penetrate through my basement wall for a DHW and forced air HX arrangement.

Question:  With these older hardwood trees near my feed and return line, is there much risk of the tree roots growing into the Logstor and causing problems down the line in a few years?  :-\

I could fell the trees but they are some bigguns.  :o  Thoughts, advice, humor, recommendations are welcome.  8)

Many thanks in advance.  -Slopster
