Equipment / Skidsteer log splitters
« on: March 26, 2018, 09:01:04 AM »
I am going to buy or build a skidsteer mount low splitter. I am not sure yet is straight out or sideways is better. I would be using on it on a Toolcat so thinking the sideways might work better.
I just came across this one that looks interesting. https://stcloud.craigslist.org/grd/d/skid-steer-wood-log-splitter/6474101449.html
If I can find some square tubing the right size, it looks like it would be fairly simple to build. How well will that work compared to the cylinder pushing directly in the end of the log like a normal splitter?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Rubber heater hose?
« on: February 13, 2018, 04:35:53 PM »
I have heard of a lot of people using heater hose with outdoor boilers but have never tried it. I need to connect a portable / movable heater and pex won't work. I thought about using unions and just disconnecting it when not in use but would get air in the system every time.
It will be connected to the pressurized side of an indoor boiler system. Will there be any problem with the hose holding up? I would be using 3/4" hose coming off a 3/4" pex line.
Is there anything else that would work better?

General Discussion / Well pump repair
« on: December 29, 2017, 11:09:26 PM »
The well at my new house quit working. The water was working when I was at the house but when I came back a week later, there was no water. I am not sure yet the problem was in the well or the pipe underground. The pump was running continuous.
It was not able to build more than a couple psi in the basement and the water was brownish that came out the valve by the pressure tank.

I pulled the pump up and it was missing the bottom o-ring on the pitless spool. I am not sure though it is just pulled off when I popped it out of the casing.

The drop pipe was 1" PVC. There was a short piece of steel pipe between the pitless adapter and the pvc. It was jusst a ball of rust. The pump had what looked like mud packed on it.

At the top of the PVC drop pipe was a tee with what looks like a vacuum breaker in it. I found a picture of it on page 20, right side of pic D in this pdf but still not sure what it's purpose is. http://www.whitewatermfg.net/pitless_adapter-brochure_11-15-08.pdf

After reading a lot of different stuff, I think I will put in a new pump, wire and poly pipe. I am thinking I should put the pump at the same depth (70' of pipe) but not sure after seeing the mud on the old pump. Is that plastic thing in the tee necessary and if so, what does it do?

I have not tried to cleanup the spool adapter yet. I have not found a place to get a replacement so hope I is usable. I think I did find a place that has the O-rings.

I have not decided yet if I should use the 160psi pipe or the 200psi pipe. It is worth the $15 extra for the 200PSI stuff or is it just overkill?

Has anyone done come across anything similar to this setup? I am hoping to get it all figured out before I drop a new pump in so I don't have to pull it again right away,

Equipment / Old tractors

I just bought a house that has these two old rusty tractors on the property. Do they likely have any value beyond scrap iron? https://photos.app.goo.gl/PtTuoEytlz9dJkwi1

Advanced Plumbing / Tying into existing floor heat options?
« on: November 30, 2017, 03:08:33 PM »
I have a project coming up soon where I need to hook up to an existing system.
The existing heat source is a wall hung on demand water heater with internal flow switch that fires the boiler when it senses flow.

I had planned on just adding a plate hx and mixing valve in series with the existing heater but with the flow switch, I don't think that will work. I am planning on putting a 3 way zone valve between the heater and pump and connect that to the heat exchanger and mixer and put a tee at the return to the heater for the plate hx return

Are there any other options that may be better? I though about using another pump instead of zone valve but then would need to add check valves too.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Ice melt
« on: September 22, 2017, 11:36:50 PM »
I am starting a new topic since the other is way off the original.
I have a customer that put some tubing in his sidewalk (two 1/2" loops) and wants to use it to melt ice.

I have never set any up before. I would assume you need to use tempered glycol at a lower temp to protect the concrete and not draw too much heat from the OWB. The last reply in the other thread said not to use tempered water. It seems like it would be a huge heat load running full temp water into the concrete.

This is going to be connected to a HeatMaster G100.

Advanced Plumbing / Forced air furnace for in floor heat?
« on: September 07, 2017, 05:13:06 PM »
I have a customer that has in floor heat in the basement that will only be connected to the outdoor boiler. He want the forced air LP furnace to use the heat exchanger backwards.

It is a brand new really well insulated house so I don't think circulating water through the plenum when the blower is off will work. Also, if it is pulling water through the main loop, that would mean the LP would have to keep the OWB warm enough to heat the floor.

I have thought of a couple ways that it can be done that should work but doesn't seem like it is worth the trouble and expense.

I have a stove that I need to clean some creosote off the powder coating that leaked out the door. What works best to get it all off without leaving stains behind?

Equipment / Is this splitter worth messing with?
« on: March 25, 2017, 01:30:21 PM »
I have a Speeco 35 ton splitter that works good but it slow and a real pain working with larger logs. I came across this but not sure if will just end up being a pile of scrap. https://madison.craigslist.org/grd/6011143106.html

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Wind
« on: March 08, 2017, 11:26:09 AM »
Been really windy here the last few days. I was following a truck with a shipping container on it this morning and it looked like the back wheels on one side looked like they came off the ground a couple times. The news reported a truck blew over on the same road a couple hours later. Also there was another truck that blew over not far away.

A house burned down, blamed on an OWB. http://www.channel3000.com/news/home-shed-destroyed-by-fire/384132546

Is anyone here running a plate heat exchanger for dhw and no mixing valve? If so, what size and is the water too hot normally or usually good?

Electronics / Anyone have an old junk Wilo pump laying around?
« on: January 24, 2017, 01:28:00 PM »
I need an electrical cover for a Wilo pump. I didn't look at the model number but it is a smaller single speed.
Cover is 3 sided similar to what Taco uses.
Or any ideas where to find them?

For Sale / Dual Force 10000 boiler
« on: December 23, 2016, 10:22:27 AM »
I have a customer that has a Dual Force 1000 outdoor boiler that is about 7 years old. He is heating around 5000 sq feet with it.
He is interested in upgrading to a newer boiler but needs to sell this one first. I am not sure how much he wants to get for it but sounded like in the $4k-$5k range.
It is a similar design to Johnson boilers.

It is located in south central Wisconsin. If anyone is interested, I can get more info. It could either be purchased direct from him or I can take it on trade and re-sell it.
